  • The Prevalence of Sexsomnia in a General Population Sample

Open Access•Ståle Pallesen, Ingvild West Saxvig et al.•ARTICLE•Archives of Sexual Behavior•2025•References: 42

Few studies have surveyed the prevalence of sexsomnia and sexsomnic behaviors in general population samples. In the present study, 1002 respondents (508 males and 494 females), mean age 50.3 years (SD = 17.5), recruited from a Norwegian survey panel, participated in an online survey about sleep phenomena and sleep habits. The survey included questions about lifetime and current parasomnias, such as sleepwalking, sleep terrors, confusional arousal…

  • The association between self-reported sleep problems, infection, and antibiotic use in patients in general practice

Open Access•Ingeborg Forthun, Knut Eirik Eliassen et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2023

Among patients visiting their GP, short sleep duration, chronic insomnia and chronic sleep problem based on self-report were associated with higher prevalence of infection and antibiotic use. These findings support the notion of a strong association between sleep and infection

  • Associations between changes in habitual sleep duration and lower self-rated health among Covid-19 survivors: Findings from a survey across 16 countries/regions

Open Access•Kentaro Matsui, Frances Chung et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2023

Changes in habitual sleep duration following SARS-CoV-2 infection were associated with lower SRH. Decreased or increased habitual sleep duration might have a bidirectional relation with post-COVID-19 symptoms. Further research is needed to better understand the mechanisms underlying these relationships for in order to improve SRH in individuals with COVID-19

  • Sleep and Sleepiness Measured by Diaries and Actigraphy among Norwegian and Austrian Helicopter Emergency Medical Service (Hems) Pilots

Open Access•Tine Almenning Flaa, Bjørn Bjorvatn et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2022

The study examined sleep and sleepiness among shift working Helicopter Emergency Medical Service pilots from Norway (Norwegian Air Ambulance; NAA) and Austria (Christophorus Flugrettungverein; CFV). Both pilot groups (N = 47) worked seven consecutive 24 h shifts. Sleep was assessed by diaries and actigraphy while sleepiness was assessed by the Karolinska Sleepiness Scale, all administered throughout the workweek. The results indicated that all pi…

  • Changes in the Work Schedule of Nurses Related to the Covid-19 Pandemic and Its Relationship with Sleep and Turnover Intention

Open Access•Ingebjørg Louise Rockwell Djupedal, Ståle Pallesen et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2022

Background: This study aimed to investigate whether different types of changes in the work schedule of nurses working rotating shifts during the COVID-19 pandemic were associated with sleep duration, sleep quality, and turnover intention. Methods: Cross-sectional questionnaire data from 694 nurses participating in the SUrvey of Shift work, Sleep and Health (SUSSH) were collected between the first and the second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic in No…

  • The Association Between Shift Work and Immunological Biomarkers in Nurses

Open Access•Bjørn Bjorvatn, John Axelsson et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Public Health•2020

Objectives: Shift work is associated with several negative health effects. The underlying pathophysiological mechanisms are unclear, but low-grade inflammation has been suggested to play a role. This project aimed to determine whether levels of immunological biomarkers differ depending on work schedule, self-reported sleep duration, self-reported sleep quality, and presence of shift work disorder (study 1). Furthermore, we aimed to determine whet…

  • Accumulated Long-Term Exposure to Workplace Bullying Impairs Psychological Hardiness: A Five-Year Longitudinal Study among Nurses

Open Access•Kristina Vaktskjold Hamre, Ståle Einarsen et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2020

Personality has been hypothesized to act as antecedent as well as an outcome of workplace bullying. Still, investigations on the longitudinal relationship between bullying and personality are scarce. We investigated the relationship between accumulated exposure to bullying at work and subsequent changes in psychological hardiness. Additionally, we examined whether hardiness predicted subsequent exposure to bullying. The data were based on the Sur…

  • European guideline for the diagnosis and treatment of insomnia

Open Access•Dieter Riemann, Chiara Baglioni et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Sleep Research•2017

This European guideline for the diagnosis and treatment of insomnia was developed by a task force of the European Sleep Research Society, with the aim of providing clinical recommendations for the management of adult patients with insomnia. The guideline is based on a systematic review of relevant meta‐analyses published till June 2016. The target audience for this guideline includes all clinicians involved in the management of insomnia, and the …

  • Associations between night work and BMI, alcohol, smoking, caffeine and exercise - a cross-sectional study

Open Access•Hogne Vikanes Buchvold, Ståle Pallesen et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2015

We found a positive significant association between night work load and BMI. This suggests that workers with a heavy night work load might need special attention and frequent health checks due to higher risk of undesirable health effects

  • Midlife insomnia and subsequent mortality: The Hordaland health study

Open Access•Børge Sivertsen, Ståle Pallesen et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2014

Insomnia was associated with a three-fold risk of mortality over 13-15 years follow-up. The risk appeared even higher in males or when insomnia was combined with short sleep duration, although such unadjusted subgroup analyses should be interpreted with caution. Establishing prevention strategies and low-threshold interventions should consequently be a prioritized task for public health policy
