  • Effects of an oral contraceptive on sexual behavior of chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes)

    Open Access•Ronald D Nadler, Jeremy F Dahl et al.•ARTICLE•Archives of Sexual Behavior•1993

  • Postpartum infertility in common chimpanzees

    Open Access•Charles E Graham, Elaine J Struthers et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Primatology•1991

The endocrine profile during normal postpartum amenorrhea in chimpanzees ( Pan troglodytes ) closely resembles that of women, and its duration is similarly extended by nursing. However, when infant chimpanzees in our colony were removed at birth, excessively prolonged postpartum amenorrhea (7–26 months duration) occurred in 24% of cases. Our endocrine studies indicate that such prolonged postpartum amenorrhea (PPAm) is a pathological condition as…

  • Copulatory frequency, urinary pregnanediol, and fertility in great apes

    Open Access•Ronald D Nadler, Delwood C Collins•ARTICLE•American Journal of Primatology•1991

Previous research on sexual behavior of the great apes suggests that female chimpanzees readily conceive in traditional laboratory pair tests, i.e., free‐access tests (FATS), but female gorillas and orang‐utans do not. Although several different mechanisms could account for this result, the one tested is derived from R.V. Short's hypothesis that “form reflects function,” with respect to the ratio of testis weight to body weight in the great apes.…

  • A ten-month study of endogenous testosterone levels and behaviour in outdoor-living female rhesus monkeys (Macaca mulatta)

Open Access•J Turner, Jane J Turner et al.•ARTICLE•Primates•1989

  • Serum levels of gonadotropins and gonadal steroids, including testosterone, during the menstrual cycle of the chimpanzee ( Pan troglodytes )

    Open Access•Ronald D Nadler, Charles E Graham et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Primatology•1985

The objective of this study was to expand the data on menstrual cycle serum hormone patterns in female common chimpanzees, both in terms of the number of cycles analyzed and by the addition of data on testosterone levels. Samples were obtained from 11 unanesthetized animals trained for conscious blood withdrawal. LH, FSH, 17β‐estradiol (E 2 ), progesterone (P), and testosterone (T) were measured by radioimmunoassay, genital swelling was recorded,…

  • Brief Report

    Open Access•Paul I Musey, Delwood C Collins et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Primatology•1983

The metabolism of estradiol‐17β is primarily an oxidative process at either carbon‐2 or carbon‐16 in the human. The objective of this study was to determine the relative importance of these two oxygenation pathways in the chimpanzee. The rate of oxidation of estradiol‐17β at each position was determined by measuring the release of tritium into body water from carbon‐2 or carbon‐16. [2‐ 3 H]‐Estradiol‐17β or [16‐ 3 H]‐estradiol‐17β was injected in…

  • Validation of radioimmunoassays for LH and FSH in the sooty mangabey ( Cercocebus atys )

    Open Access•David R Mann, Michael S Blank et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Primatology•1982

Heterologous radioimmunoassays (RIA) for macaque LH and FSH were validated for the measurement of these hormones in the sooty mangabey and mangabey pituitary LH was characterized relative to rhesus monkey LH. Dilutions of a pituitary mangabey extract and a partially purified preparation of mangabey LH ran parallel to a rhesus monkey standard (LER 1909‐2) in the ovine‐ovine (o‐o) LH assay but showed some deviation from parallelism in the rhesus mo…

  • The interrelationship between sex skin swelling and the urinary excretion of LH, estrone, and pregnanediol by the cycling female chimpanzee

    Open Access•Janet W McArthur, Inese Z Beitins et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Primatology•1981

The interrelationship between sex skin swelling and the urinary excretion of luteinizing hormone and sex steroids was investigated during ovulatory menstrual cycles in adult female chimpanzees. Estrone was excreted in two peaks, one during the preovulatory and the other during the midluteal phase. Maximum swelling of the sex skin was attained several days before the preovulatory estrone peak. The LH surge preceded or accompanied beginning detumes…
