Maternal Age and Risk of Labor and Delivery Complications
Monitoring of non-cigarette tobacco use using Google Trends
The results of this study validate that Google Trends has the potential to be a valuable monitoring tool for tobacco use. The near real-time monitoring features of Google Trends may complement traditional surveillance methods and lead to faster and more convenient monitoring of emerging trends in tobacco use
Parental warmth and risks of substance use in children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder
Longitudinal study findings suggest that in addition to the established risk of ADHD and maternal SUD in development of child SUD, low paternal warmth is also associated with onset of SUD. This was evident after controlling for pertinent parent and child psychopathology. These findings suggest that paternal warmth warrants further investigation as a key target for novel interventions to prevent SUD in children with ADHD. More focused investigatio…

Imputing Missing Data
Choosing the most appropriate method to handle missing data during analyses is one of the most challenging decisions confronting researchers. Often, missing values are just ignored rather than replaced with a reliable imputation method. Six methods of data imputation were used to replace missing data from two data sets of varying sizes; this article examines the results. Each imputation method is defined, and the pros and cons of its use in socia…

Comparison of Comorbidity Indices for Patients With Head and Neck Cancer
BACKGROUND: Comorbidity is an important prognostic factor for elderly patients with head and neck cancer. Investigators are faced with the dilemma of selecting the appropriate comorbidity instrument for outcomes research in cancer. The goal of this study was to compare 2 general comorbidity indices with 2 disease-specific indices. METHODS: The Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER)-Medicare-linked database was used to identify 15,493 …
Modeling Service Access in a Homeless Population
Previous research has shown use of greater amounts and more types of services to be robustly associated with positive outcomes. However, research has neither adequately explored nor conceptualized the complex interactions among demographics, homelessness, mental illness, and service use. Subjects (N=396) were systematically sampled. Service use was divided into four sectors: homeless amelioration, homeless maintenance, mental health, and chemical…

A Comparison of Clinical and Structured Interview Diagnoses in a Homeless Mental Health Clinic
Utilization Patterns of Health Maintenance Organization Disenrollees
This article addresses several questions about the effect of disenrollment on the start-up phenomenon in health maintenance organizations that were raised in a recent exchange of articles and comments in this journal. The results show that disenrollees, like continuous enrollees, go through a start-up phase of utilization that decreases over duration of membership to a stable lower level. The study also differentiates between voluntary and involu…
