Global approaches to integrated care: Best practices and ongoing innovation
The integration of behavioral health in primary care is critical for addressing worldwide concerns for access to, and quality of, health care services for physical and mental health promotion, prevention, and disease management. Clearly, promoting knowledge exchange internationally is critical to progress. In late 2015, the American Psychological Association convened an interdisciplinary summit on global approaches to integrated health care, brin…
Accomplishments of 77 VA mental health professionals with a lived experience of mental illness
Anecdotal reports and first-person accounts by psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and nurses with lived experience of mental illness ("prosumers") indicate that they can be effective in these roles, but little is known about the extent, nature, or contributions of this group. Competently functioning prosumers are in a unique position to increase hope for recovery and reduce stigma and discrimination across the mental health field, to t…
Strengthening psychology’s workforce for older adults: Implications of the Institute of Medicine’s report to Congress
Professional psychology faces an urgent crisis, which the following facts paint in stark relief. Adults over age 65 will rise to 20% of the U.S. population over the next 15 years and already account for a third of the country's health care expenditures. Up to 8 million older adults experience mental health and substance use conditions in a given year, yet most psychologists receive no training in their assessment and treatment. No more than an es…
The Revised Scale for Caregiving Self-Efficacy: Reliability and Validity Studies
Two samples of family caregivers (Study 1: N = 169; Study 2: N = 145) of cognitively impaired older adults were used to revise, extend, and evaluate a measure of perceived self-efficacy for caregiving tasks. The Revised Scale for Caregiving Self-Efficacy measures 3 domains of caregiving self-efficacy: Obtaining Respite, Responding to Disruptive Patient Behaviors, and Controlling Upsetting Thoughts. The 3 subscales show strong internal consistency…
The incidence and correlates of erectile problems in patients with Alzheimer's disease
Sex roles and sexual dysfunction in college students
We conducted an assessment of the nature and prevalence of sexual dysfunctions and concerns within a nonclinical population of university students. Our hypotheses were that (a) sexual pressures would be more positively related to manifest sexual performance dysfunctions among masculine sex‐typed men than among nonmasculine sex‐typed men and that (b) androgynous subjects would report fewer sexual problems and concerns than nonandrogynous subjects.…

Induction of depressed mood: A test of opponent-process theory
Solomon's (1980) opponent-process theory of acquired motivation has been used to explain many phenomena in which affective or hedonic contrasts appear to exist, but has not been applied to the induction of depressed mood. The purpose of this study, therefore, was to determine whether opponent-process theory can be applied to this area. Velten's (1968) mood-induction procedure was used and subjects were assigned either to a depression-induction co…
Expectations for the effects of aging on sexuality in parents and average married couples
The expectations of 229 college students about sexual activity during each decade from age 20 to age 80 were assessed. Approximately half of the subjects made estimations of their parents' intercourse frequency during these age periods; the remainder estimated married couples “on the average.” All subjects filled out the Profile of Mood States (POMS) immediately after estimating sexual activity. Results indicated that, in all decades but the 70's…
