  • Assessing the Need for Adapting a Measure of Sexual Assault Risk Perception to be Culturally Specific for Black College Women

    Open Access•Noelle M St Vil, Kathleen A Parks•ARTICLE•Violence Against Women•2025•References: 8

Using a mixed methods approach, this study sought feedback from Black college women ( n = 60) on an existing Video Vignette Risk Perception Measure (VVRPM) developed for assessing women's awareness of behavioral and environmental risk cues of sexual assault. Findings from this study suggest that the current VVRPM is not an accurate measure for assessing SA risk cue awareness in Black college women as it is not culturally congruent with their live…

    Kathleen A Parks, Michael R Frone et al.•ARTICLE•Substance Use & Misuse•2020

Background: Understanding the role that medical use of prescription drugs plays in nonmedical use of prescription drugs can inform prevention efforts. Open Access•Amy Hequembourg, Amy L Hequembourg et al.•ARTICLE•Violence Against Women•2013•Cited by: 22•References: 13

This study examines relationships among childhood sexual abuse (CSA), risky alcohol use, and adult sexual victimization among bisexual and lesbian women. Half (51.2%) of women reported CSA and 71.2% reported adult sexual victimization. Perpetrators were generally male, and 56.4% of women's most recent adult sexual victimization incidents occurred after coming out. Regression results indicated that adult sexual victimization severity was associate…

    Open Access•Kathleen A Parks, Amy Hequembourg et al.•ARTICLE•Psychology of Women Quarterly•2008•References: 7

Heavy alcohol consumption (Testa & Parks, 1996) and childhood sexual abuse (CSA; Messman-Moore & Long, 2003) have been associated with adult sexual victimization. We examined the social behavior of 42 women under two alcohol conditions (high dose and low dose) in a bar laboratory. Women were videotaped interacting with a man they had just met. Women in the higher dose condition engaged in more open body position and talked, stood, and walked more…

    Open Access•Kathleen A Parks, Lisa M Zetes-Zanatta et al.•ARTICLE•Aggressive Behavior•1999•References: 52

A model of bar victimization is proposed that explores the relationships among a woman's exposure to the bar environment (i.e., frequency of going to bars), her intoxication in that setting (i.e., usual number of drinks), and such individual difference factors as her previous history of victimization (childhood sexual abuse, lifetime violence, and previous partner abuse) and personality characteristics (depression, social anxiety, sensation seeki…

  • Observations of increased activity and tool use in captive rhesus monkeys exposed to troughs of water

    Open Access•Kathleen A Parks, Melinda A Novak•ARTICLE•American Journal of Primatology•1993

This study investigated the effects of water troughs on nonhuman primates housed in a captive environment. Two groups of rhesus monkeys ( Macaca mulatta ) were exposed to water‐filled troughs under three conditions: (1) standing water, (2) running water, and (3) a replication of standing and running water with novel objects. The effects of water exposure were assessed using a pretest phase (baseline), test phase (trough present), and posttest pha…
