“Persuasion Pathways” to the “Hero Voter”
In July 2022, the Labour Party launched a renewed door-to-door campaigning script with a view to improving the way the party on the ground speaks to constituents, bearing in mind that for most voters, door-to-door canvassing is the most direct contact they will have with the party. The changed script reflected a return to a persuasion model, in place of the approach entirely focused on collecting data and getting identified supporters to the poll…

The Rebranding of Newcastle as a Smart City. Cui Bono
The city of Newcastle, regional capital of North East England and home to “the UK’s smartest street” located a short distance from its brand new Helix district, is described as having successfully transitioned from a traditionally industrial city to a “smart” city, able to use digital tools to address issues such as congestion, pollution, waste reduction and parking, with the dual objective of “helping people to live better lives” and of making t…
Labour and the Interplay of Brexit and Electoral Politics
This article analyses the interplay of Brexit as an issue per se and as a game of electoral politics between Labour and the Conservatives, from the time of the 2016 EU referendum to the December 2019 election. It seeks to provide a nuanced and multidimensional understanding of Labour’s strategic choices in relation to Brexit which goes beyond one-dimensional accounts of Jeremy Corbyn’s failure of leadership. This is achieved through a game theory…
The (Unintended) Consequences of New Labour
This article draws from the fields of political science and of organisational studies to explore the short-term and long-term impact of New Labour’s party management on the quality of party processes as well as on party reputation. It is based on the long-term ethnographic participant observation of the Labour Party at local and regional levels, as well as national events such as annual conferences. The article starts by identifying the distincti…
Wilful Blindness’
This article shows how Lewis Minkin’s specific approach meticulously unpicks the mechanisms of party management to reveal the vulnerabilities of New Labour’s managerial culture and behaviour. Minkin breaks new ground in our understanding of organisational change and offers a better grasp of the dialectic between organisational culture and party reputation. The first section of the article presents the main counterproductive effects of the New Lab…

New Technology, Organizational Change and Governance
