Kawon Kim, Jeffrey S Simons et al.•ARTICLE•Substance Use & Misuse•2026

Background Negative consequences of alcohol use are a significant concern among the college population. Previous research has highlighted the importance of emotional processes linked to alcohol-related issues. This study investigated the role of effortful emotional control, poor emotional (i.e., sadness and anger) regulation, and affect lability on alcohol use and related problems using a sample of college students.Method Participants were recrui…

    Open Access•Austin M Hahn, Christine K Hahn et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Trauma Theory…•2021

  • Affective dynamics among veterans: Associations with distress tolerance and posttraumatic stress symptoms

    Open Access•Jeffrey S Simons, Raluca M Simons et al.•ARTICLE•Emotion•2020

We tested a dynamic structural equation model (DSEM; Asparouhov, Hamaker, & Muthén, 2018) of positive and negative affect in 254 veterans with approximately 1.5 years of experience sampling data. The analysis provided estimates of several aspects of veteran's emotional experience including "trait" positive and negative affect (i.e., mean levels), inertia (i.e., tendency for emotions to self-perpetuate), innovation variance (conceptualized as labi…

  • Women’s Behavioral Responses to Sexual Aggression: The Role of Secondary Cognitive Appraisals and Self-Regulation

    Open Access•Christine K Tirabassi, Jean Caraway et al.•ARTICLE•Violence Against Women•2016•Cited by: 3•References: 7

Sexual assault history, secondary cognitive appraisals, and a dual-process model of self-regulation were examined as predictors of women's intended behavioral responses to hypothetical sexual aggression. College women ( N = 435) read a sexually aggressive scenario and rated their intentions to engage in assertive, polite, and passive behavioral responses. Results indicated secondary cognitive appraisals predicted less assertive, more polite, and …
