  • Effects of social pressure on erections and evaluations of erotica

    Barry J Coyne, Herbert J Cross•ARTICLE•The Journal of Sex Research•1988•Cited by: 2•References: 3

Two forms of social pressure—demand for erection and social in‐flunce—were tested on pairs of men viewing either nudes or explicit erotica. To test demand for erection, each man was told that hearing bio‐feedback of a co‐participant's erections might either increase or decrease his own arousal. To test social influence, each man heard bogus feedback of the other's erections, whereas controls heard true biofeedback of their own arousal. Four depen…

  • Modifying hypnotic suggestibility with the Carleton Skills Training program

Brad L Bates, Robert J Miller et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Personality and Social…•1988•Cited by: 3

The Carleton Skills Training (CST) program was used to investigate (a) whether increases in hypnotic responsiveness obtained at Carleton University could be replicated at a different laboratory, (b) the influence of demand characteristics on suggestibility gains, and (c) whether initial gains are maintained over time. After two screening sessions, a replication and experimental group received the CST program, while a control group was allowed to …

  • Relationship between Psychological Androgyny and Self-Actualization Tendencies

    Open Access•Thomas M Kimlicka, Peter L Sheppard et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1987

Bem's Sex-role Inventory and the Personal Orientation Inventory were administered to 339 college men and 265 women to test Bern's hypothesis that a relationship would exist between androgyny and a measure of psychological adjustment. Analysis gave some support for the relationship between sex-role identity and self-actualizing tendencies for women but not for men

    Open Access•Thomas M Kimlicka, Thomas Kimlicka et al.•ARTICLE•Psychology of Women Quarterly•1983•Cited by: 7•References: 1

Unmarried female undergraduates ( n = 204) completed the Bem Sex Role Inventory and measures of body image and self-esteem. Androgyny and masculinity were associated with self-esteem, body satisfaction, and sexual satisfaction. Androgynous and masculine subjects were generally similar and well adjusted; whereas feminine and undifferentiated subjects were similar and less well adjusted. Results are interpreted as evidence for the adaptive nature o…

  • A Construct Validity Study of the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator

Open Access•Deborah J Cohen, David Cohen et al.•ARTICLE•Educational and Psychological…•1981

This study assessed the construct validity of the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator, MBTI (Myers, 1976). The rationale was that friends or relatives can make judgments about an individual which will be associated with his/her predominant personality type. Forty-eight subjects rated themselves on two seven-point Likert scales designed to assess behavioral styles. These inventories (designated, "Behavioral Style Inventories") were designed for this study…

  • Curanderos and Mental Health Professionals

Open Access•Silverio Arena, Silverio Arenas et al.•ARTICLE•Hispanic Journal of Behavioral…•1980•Cited by: 1•References: 9

Curanderos and mental health care professionals differ in the way they perceive psychopathology, as demonstrated in the way they responded to a set of hypothetical case histories. These vignettes depicted people suffering from a variety of psychiatric and folk-medical disorders. Compared with professionals, cur anderos were found to be reluctant to label the disorders as "mental illness." They also perceived the people portrayed in the vignettes …

    Open Access•Herbert J Cross, George F Kawash•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1968

The Parental Attitude Research Instrument (PARI) was revised and shortened in an attempt to assess authoritarianism and warmth. A factor analysis demonstrated the logic of combining the scales into these two factors. The relationship between these factors and authoritarianism was explored by testing 46 college students with the PARI short form and both forms of the Social Science Research Council (SSRC) steropathy scales. Both PARI factors were s…
