  • Food distribution, dominance, and aggressive behaviors in bonnet macaques

    Open Access•Maria L Boccia, Mark L Laudenslager et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Primatology•1988

Resource availability or distribution may affect interindividual competition in species such as primates, which forage in social groups, and several field studies suggest that dominance status predicts access to restricted food sources. Increased competition due to restricted resources may result in the intensification of aggressive behaviors. The study reported here examines the impact of manipulation of the distribution of food resources in a l…

  • Personality traits of adolescent pig‐tailed monkeys ( Macaca nemestrina )

Open Access•Nancy G Caine, Huberta Earle et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Primatology•1983

Personality ratings of ten adolescent pig‐tailed macaques ( Macaca nemestrina ) were carried out by three experienced observers who used a simple three‐point rating system. A modification of Stevenson‐Hinde & Zunz's [1978] procedure, the agreement between raters on each of 21 traits was evaluated. When correlated with social rank, it was shown that dominant animals were rated as being, for example, confident, effective, and opportunistic. Subordi…

  • Physiology of maternal separation in a bonnet macaque infant

    Open Access•Martin Reite, Deborah S Snyder•ARTICLE•American Journal of Primatology•1982

A bonnet monkey infant ( M. radiata ) was monitored both physiologically and behaviorally during a separation experiment in which both its mother and other conspecifiecs were removed from its social group leaving the bonnet infant with three adult pigtailed females. The separated infant exhibited the characteristic slouched posture of depression and physiological changes including decreases in the heart rate and body temperature, increases in car…

  • The effect of peer contact upon physiological response to maternal separation

Open Access•Nancy G Caine, Nancy Caine et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Primatology•1981

The response of both human and nonhuman primate infants to separation from their mothers is characterized by agitation or protest behaviors followed by a behavioral depressive reaction. In monkeys, this behavioral syndrome has striking physiological correlates, including heart rate and sleep disturbances. There is, however, considerable individual variability in response to maternal separation. The authors hypothesized that the amount of contact …
