  • Treatment of Acute Mania with Ambient Air Anionization

Open Access•A James Giannini, Steven M Melemis et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•2007

High concentrations of ambient anions (O2-) were used to augment treatment for 20 acutely manic male patients. Anions were produced by an anion generator in a sealed room. A double-blind crossover design was used, and responses were evaluated with the Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale by 2 blinded raters. This produced a significant antimanic effect: total rating scores declined with anion treatment. Presham and postsham total scores for these 5 wer…

  • Teaching With Symbols Tangentially Related to Topic

    A James Giannini, Rachel K Bowman et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•2001

40 undergraduate students, none of whom were history or literature majors, attended a lecture on Medieval literature. For half the students the lecture was supplemented by two sets of slides. One set summarized course content while the second set contained slides of paintings or other forms of visual art which were only tangentially related to the topic. For the other half of the student-group, the lecture was supplemented by course content slide…

  • Sexualization of the Female Foot as a Response to Sexually Transmitted Epidemics

Open Access•A James Giannini, Andrew E Slaby et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1998

The authors reviewed historical literature and hypothesized a relationship between epidemics of sexually transmitted diseases and foot fetishism. They tested this hypothesis by quantifying foot-fetish depictions in the mass-circulation pornographic literature during a 30-yr. interval. An exponential increase was noted during the period of the current AIDS epidemic. The authors offer reasons for this possible relationship

  • Comparison of Alternative Treatment Techniques in Bulimia

A James Giannini, Gale Colapietro et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1998

Bulimia and chemical dependency are thought to be mediated by the nucleus accumbens, the primary pleasure center in the brain. These disorders consequently share biological, behavioral, and demographic characteristics. Also, earlier researchers have reported similar responses to different types of pharmacological intervention. There has, however, been little investigation of comparative nonpharmacological treatment modalities. The authors treated…

  • Alexithymia, Affective Disorders and Substance Abuse

    Open Access•A James Giannini•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1996

Alexithymia is a syndrome manifesting affective, cognitive, and perceptual social defects, which include diminished affective-interpretive abilities. These abilities have been observed to be decreased in opiate abuse, major depression, and premenstrual depressive disorder, but increased in cocaine abuse and manic states. Conditions associated with decreased affective-interpretive abilities are also associated with decreased central catecholamine …

  • Lack of Relationship Between Handedness and Intuitive and Intellectual (Rationalistic) Modes of Information Processing

A James Giannini, Mary Ellen Barringer et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of General Psychology•1984•Cited by: 2

The relationship between rationalistic and intuitionistic styles of information processing and handedness was studied in 98 Ss who were asked to view videotapes of medical interns gambling and to determine solely on the basis of facial cues the amount of the payoff offered to each intern during a specific gambling trial. Two groups on the basis of the Ss' interpreting styles were defined: rationalistic Ss indicated that they used a systematic met…

  • Intellect Versus Intuition—A Dichotomy in the Reception of Nonverbal Communication

A James Giannini, Joanne T Daood et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of General Psychology•1978•Cited by: 1

Interpretation of nonverbal facial cues was studied in two groups of male and female medical students, health-professionals, and undergraduates (N = 122). All Ss were asked to view videotapes of other students engaged in a learning task and to determine solely on the basis of facial clues the amount of monetary reward offered to a videotaped student during a specific learning trial. On the basis of the Ss interpreting styles, two groups were defi…
