Exploring Geography Education Through Vexillology: Flag Design and the Concept of Place
General education (Gen Ed) courses, especially in geography, offer opportunities for students to explore new topics and perhaps discover new academic interests. Gen Ed courses allow instructors to find creative ways of helping students understand important concepts. This research, conducted in a Gen Ed world geography course, explores students’ understanding of the concept of place through flag design. Students were provided with a booklet in whi…
Seeing the World through Maps: The Effectiveness of Map Knowledge in Flag Recognition
This study aims to understand students’ knowledge of the use of political maps in flags. Students from a module at the National University of Singapore were provided a six-item questionnaire. The results showed that Singap…
Keeping bio‐alive in geography education
With the rapid changes our planet is undergoing, biogeography plays a key role in addressing real‐world issues such as species distribution change. However, biogeography is a discipline lacking a strong presence in education. This paper examines various curricula from Asia, the United Kingdom, and United States to understand the current status of biogeography education. We found that while some biogeographic concepts, especially those around biod…
Anticipatory Marine Conservation Outcomes: Management Scenarios for Whale Shark in Southeast Asia
The whale shark is a globally endangered species that is distributed in tropical and warm temperate waters. This study modeled the present-day and future habitat suitability of this species in the Sunda tectonic plate region in Southeast Asia to identify changes and highlight potential areas for conservation. Presence data from the International Union for Conservation of Nature were combined with six environment variables to model habitat suitabi…
