Poverty and Place in Britain, 1968-99
To date, analyses of long-term trends in the spatial distribution of poverty in Britain have been frustrated by a lack of consistency in definitions, data sources and measures, as well as by changes over time in census and administrative geographies. This paper draws upon a series of national poverty surveys in order to derive methodologically consistent estimates of breadline and core poverty. These models are then applied to census data in orde…
The geography of smoking in Leeds: Estimating individual smoking rates and the implications for the location of stop smoking services
Smoking is an important and topical health issue in the UK. In Leeds, the target is to reduce smoking prevalence by 9 per cent by 2010. However, a key unknown is the likely distribution of smokers across the city. This paper aims to estimate individual smoking rates using microsimulation and hence evaluate the performance of established stop smoking services, e.g. how well do they serve local areas and to what extent does attendance vary between …
Mortality in relation to sex in the affluent world
Background: This paper explores newly available data for 22 countries with reliably recorded mortality data. The past century saw dramatic falls in mortality for both males and females in the most affluent countries of the world. However, these falls are not consistent for both men and women and the inequalities in the male:female mortality ratios are not well understood. Design: By aggregating mortality at each year of life for the 22 countries …
Spatial patterns in breast cancer incidence in north‐west Lancashire
Breast cancer is a disease whose incidence is increasing in both developed and developing countries, but whose complex aetiology is not dearly understood. Recent research suggests that the environment may be an important factor, hence an investigation into spatial patterning of incidence could inform such research. We use data on incidence in north‐west Lancashire and apply some techniques for exploratory spatial analysis, at a variety of spatial…
