Open Access•Xiaoxuan Lu, Xiaohan Lu•ARTICLE•The Historic Environment Policy &…•2025

Several properties in the Merchant City are not qualified as listed buildings but are designated shortly after restoration. This controversial phenomenon reflects legislation issues of listed buildings on the one hand and restoration issues with built heritage on the other. An investigation incorporating the review of existing preservation policies, archival research, and detailed case studies, complemented by on-site inspections, has led to the …

  • Entangled Frontiers

    Open Access•Xiaoxuan Lu•ARTICLE•Geo Geography and Environment•2025•References: 3

The dominant image of Shenzhen as one of China's most rapidly urbanised and densely populated cities stands in sharp contrast to the often‐overlooked fact that fresh water resources within its territory can supply only a miniscule fraction of its demand. An untold story of Shenzhen is how its rapid transformation has co‐evolved with the development of one of the most sophisticated urban blue infrastructures in the country. Within Shenzhen's munic…

Open Access•W Ren, Shaofeng Li et al.•ARTICLE•Applied Linguistics•2023

This study investigates the effects of instruction on second language (L2) pragmatic competence and the factors that moderate the effectiveness of pragmatics instruction. A comprehensive literature search yielded 29 primary studies that involved 1,898 L2 learners, generating 54 effect sizes for between-group contrasts. Aggregated results showed that pragmatics instruction had a large, positive effect on the development of pragmatic competence, g …

  • Ambiguous temporariness

    Open Access•Xiaoxuan Lu•ARTICLE•Landscape Research•2023•Cited by: 1•References: 14

This article integrates temporality into territoriality theories and investigates Hong Kong’s small urban open spaces through a territorial perspective. It conceptualises these compact public open spaces as landscapes of different territorial events, foregrounds the temporal aspects of the territorialising processes, and analyzes the frictions between the various social and environmental processes that define the city’s formative cycles. Focussin…

  • Re-territorializing Mengla

    Open Access•Xiaoxuan Lu•ARTICLE•Cities•2021•References: 14

This profile of Mengla contributes to our understanding of the city itself and the drastic transformations underway in China's vast inner Asian borderlands. Applying the conceptual lens of territorialization, it offers a critical review of the physical and discursive transition of Mengla from “backwater” to “bridgehead” within the specific context of China's anti-poverty campaign. It first contextualizes the city's recent transformation within th…

  • My Love from the Mountain

    Open Access•Xiaoxuan Lu•ARTICLE•Area•2021•References: 16

Critical examinations of the enduring geographical myth of natural borders challenge the technical approach toward borders that tempts us to think about and act in the world in exclusively territorial and geometric terms. Drawing insights from and seeking to contribute to existing literature on the reification, naturalisation, and fetishisation of borders, this two‐part paper presents a unique case study of contingent bordering processes at Mount…

  • Divergent Memories of Tumen Shan-shui

Xiaoxuan Lu•ARTICLE•European Journal of Korean Studies•2019

Focusing on the interplay between memory and place, this article examines the rationale behind the use of axonometric drawings (axons) in a geographical research study of the Tumen/Tuman River region encompassing the borders shared by China, Russia and North Korea. The concepts of “memory of place” and “place of memory” guide the structure of this project and the flow of this article. “Memory of place” emphasises the lived experience of our physi…
