Humusaufbau within German-speaking regenerative farming communities in Switzerland and Austria
This paper contextualises regenerative agriculture (RA) in Switzerland and Austria through qualitative interviews with farmers in order to explore how Humusaufbau (soil organic matter increase) acts as a boundary object, unifying diverse discourses and practices. We show that in this context, RA by centring on Humusaufbau actively addresses the challenges posed by the climate crisis to agriculture while simultaneously providing farmers with acces…
How transformative are innovation funding programs?
We describe a framework to systematically classify and assess innovation funding programs by their potential to contribute to sustainability transformation and show how to apply it to concrete examples.
Transformative innovation beyond economics and technology. Insights from practice, policy, and research in Switzerland
Innovation for sustainability transformation in Switzerland is constrained by the predominant focus on market-driven technological innovation, while social innovation receives insufficient support
Shaping circular futures
Innovation for sustainability transformation
The 2024 saguf annual conference will explore fields of tension that must be addressed to build up enabling framework conditions for innovation for sustainability transformation
Carbon dioxide removal
Carbon dioxide removal (CDR) is recognized as an important tool for addressing residual emissions and achieving net-zero emission targets. While some have cautioned that a focus on CDR in policy processes may lead to delayed efforts to mitigate emissions, others have argued that such concerns are unwarranted. Nevertheless, the circumstances under which CDR could help or delay emissions mitigation in given contexts remain unclear. This paper explo…
How previous experiences shape actors' current perspectives in integrated natural resource management
Previous experiences play a multifaceted role in shaping current perspectives in integrated natural resource management. We used qualitative interviews and a quantitative survey to study the similarities and differences in terms of the links between the diverse actors' previous experiences and their current perspectives on the various issues to be resolved in a real‐world integrated watershed management project. We found that the quantity and qua…
Building pathways between transdisciplinarity and transformation
The notion of “transformation” has moved from academic discussion and is now part of the discourse of public and private organizations. Here, we offer a systematic examination of how combining transformation and transdisciplinary approaches can support the transformation to sustainability. In recent years, the notion of “transformation” has moved from academia to the strategic agendas of public and private organizations. Within this discourse, bot…
Innovations for the sustainability transformation
How can we understand, analyze and design innovations for the sustainability transformation? The newly formed saguf working group INSIST explores the links between sustainability, innovation and transformation in theoretical, empirical and practical respects. The focus is to move away from a technicist framework of ecological modernization to a more reflexive and inclusive concept of transformative innovation

When experts feel threatened
This paper explores how experts involved in river management projects in Switzerland consider public participation. It reflects on the consequences that these considerations have on the potential for participation to become a political space. Public participation has become a standard practice in river management at the European level since the 1990s. In Switzerland, the federal government incentivises public participation in river‐work projects …
When controversies cascade
Energy controversies have been widely studied. Such studies are, however, generally based on either single case studies, providing rich and in-depth understanding of (local) dynamics of planning and implementation processes, or they focus on understanding responses to a specific technology (not bound to a location). Therefore these studies tend to overlook a key dynamic in controversy, namely that publics respond to projects by drawing on earlier…
How social sciences and humanities can contribute to transformative science
Social sciences and humanities play important roles in sustainability-oriented transformative research. A saguf workshop revealed what these roles can look like
Joint problem framing as reflexive practice
Research on Natural Resources
The dysfunctional use of resources in modern societies arises from increasingly fragmented ways of understanding natural resources. Consequently, there have been repeated calls for integrative knowledge production, and various approaches to integration have been proposed, including such as interdisciplinary or transdisciplinary resource research and integrated resource management. The conceptual space proposed here can be applied as a tool for im…
Managing geoenergy-induced seismicity with society
Contemporary and future low-carbon energy supply requires using the deep underground. Ample evidence shows that onshore oil and gas extraction, associated wastewater injection, deep geothermal systems, and carbon capture and storage can induce damaging seismicity. While induced seismicity exhibits symptoms of a potentially controversial issue, research today has been limited to seismic hazard and risk. Here we argue for the need of social scienti…
Stakeholder Dialogue for Sustainability
saguf board members participated in a Stakeholder Dialogue initiated by the Swiss Federal Council to jointly elaborate its new Sustainable Development Strategy
The Role of Social Sciences and Humanities in Integrative Research on Natural Resources
The saguf-working group Integrative Research on Natural Resources (AG IRF) explores the character of an integrative research on natural resources and the preconditions for and possibilities of a better cooperation between scientific domains
