The life and work of Robert J. Adcock. Part I: The figure of the Earth
The American mathematician Robert Jackson Adcock (1826–1895) is an obscure figure, hitherto associated with the history of regression analysis and least-squares, whose identity and life are described in Part II of this work. In 1872, he self-published a pamphlet, ‘Gravitation to the sphere and the two ellipsoids of revolution: ratio of the axes of a rotating fluid mass’, which seems to have been largely ignored at the time. It effectively became …
The life and work of Robert J. Adcock. Part II: Biography and establishment of authorship
Between 1870 and 1896, the American mathematician Robert Jackson Adcock (1826–1895) contributed a number of short articles to early mathematical journals such as The Analyst . His biography is given here for the first time. An obscure figure hitherto associated with the history of regression analysis and least-squares, he has, on occasion, been confused with a nephew of the same name. Before the American Civil War, Adcock was first a pupil and th…
Through a glass darkly: Patients of the Illinois State Hospital for the Insane at Jacksonville, USA (1854–80)
The State Hospital for the Insane at Jacksonville, Morgan County, Illinois, was the first public hospital of its kind to be established in the state and among the earliest to be built on the ‘Kirkbride Plan’. It opened for patients in 1851. We describe the background to the establishment of the hospital and, so far as is possible from publicly available sources, its catchment area, the nature of the patients held there up to 1880, its mechanisms …
Strontium Isotope Stratigraphy: Lowess Version 3: Best Fit to the Marine Sr‐Isotope Curve for 0–509 Ma and Accompanying Look‐up Table for Deriving Numerical Age
An improved and updated version of the statistical LOWESS fit to the marine 87Sr/86Sr record and a revised look-up table (V3:10/99; available from [email protected]) based upon it enables straightforward conversion of 87Sr/86Sr to numerical age, and vice versa, for use in strontium isotope stratigraphy (SIS). The table includes 95% confidence intervals on predictions of numerical age from 87Sr/86Sr. This version includes the Triassic and Paleo…
Sources for a history of the ternary diagram
Anyone reading the literature on the history of graphs will soon realize that the use of graphie displays of any type was really quite unusual until the mid-ninetenth century and that those scientists who did make use of them are often familiar to us as creative thinkers in their own fields of endeavour. A ternary diagram (also known as a triangular diagram ) is a particular type of graph which consists of an equilateral triangle in which a given…
