Population--Environment Dynamics
Population-Environment Dynamics: Ideas and Observations
In October 1990 the University of Michigan hosted an International Symposium on Population-Environment Dynamics to bring together recognized leaders in this area. The meetings...focused on identifying the underlying theoretical issues and developing a research agenda for the field. Experts from the University other research and teaching institutions and a number of government agencies throughout the world participated in these discussions. The pa…
Bridging the gap: International Organizations as Organizations
This article attempts to build a bridge between the study of international organizations and the sociology of organizations. Comparisons between functionalism in the two fields are found to be especially important in understanding different treatments of international organizations. We suggest that a number of concepts from the sociology of organizations can be effectively used to illuminate issues in international organizations. We focus on orga…
Managing not-so-small Numbers
The problem here is what to do with an N of 20? Comparative case studies effectively deal with up to five or so observations. Aggregate statistical studies can easily with hundreds and thousands of observations. But with an N of 20 is too large for detailed case comparisons and too small for the use of powerful statistical analyses. This article proposes a middle ground that weaves an argument from a combination of multiple regression equations a…

On the Institutional Analysis of Population Programs
Population programs have remained the stepchildren of the contemporary social science literature on population. They have weathered great hopes, disillusionments, and controversy. Their successes and failures in affecting fertility have received widespread attention. Yet the programs themselves, and their institutional realities, have not been given the sustained and rigorous consideration they deserve. Population programs can influence demograph…

Western Imperialist Armies in Asia
The European conquest of Asia is one of the major historical movementsof our time. Pannikar calls this the age of Vasco DeGama, Parry writesof the rise of European Hegemony, and McNeill sees it as part of an evenbroader historical process that he calls the rise of the west. For all observers it was truly a conquest, a violent and bloody struggle in which Europe gained the ascendence through superior military might

The Malayan Bureaucracy and its Occupational Communities: A Comment on James de Vere Allen's 'Malayan Civil Service 1874-1941
Few sociologists would quarrel with Dr. Allen's use of the term bureaucracy in his analysis of the Malayan colonial government. Nor could one argue that he has failed to come to grips with certain central sociological issues in the analysis of bureaucracies. On the contrary, Dr. Allen has given us an excellent case study that illuminates some of the dynamics of the bureaucratic processes

Econocological Analysis and Differential Economic Growth Rates: A Comment
One can only welcome Thomas R. McHale's article, Econocological Analysis and Differential Economic Growth Rates. It is an economist of rare insight and intellectual humility who reaches outside of his own discipline in an attempt to include the non-economic determinants of behavior in a systematic theoretical framework. It is an especially happy event that this particular attempt is made by a scholar who combines a competence in economics with a …
