  • Food banks in schools in England

    Open Access•Wendy Baker, William Baker et al.•ARTICLE•British Educational Research…•2026•Cited by: 1•References: 32

This article investigates the number and distribution of food banks in schools in England. Drawing on a novel source of nationally representative data, we show that one in five schools operate a food bank. This amounts to over 4000 school‐based food banks across the country. This important finding shows that there are now more food banks inside schools than outside of them. Our analysis, using responses from representative Teacher Tapp data ( n =…

  • George Henry Lewes’ Diary for January–March 1872

    William Baker, William L Baker•ARTICLE•ANQ A Quarterly Journal of Short…•2025•References: 5

The year 1871 closed with George Eliot [GE: Marian Evans] (1819–80)] battling health problems, even as she strove to complete what would become Middlemarch. “My health,” she wrote on 20 December, “

  • Schools and food charity in England

    Open Access•Wendy Baker, William Baker et al.•ARTICLE•British Educational Research…•2023•Cited by: 3•References: 43

This paper critically examines the development of food charity in schools in England. Growing numbers of schools, often in partnership with charities and businesses, are directly providing food to parents who are struggling to feed their families. This paper analyses how and why this is happening and its broader significance. The growth of food charity in schools is explained through a mixture of a retreating welfare state, an ongoing cost of liv…

  • Is Wildland Fire Increasing in Sagebrush Landscapes of the Western United States

    William L Baker•ARTICLE•Annals of the Association of…•2013•References: 23

Wildland fire is expected to increase with global change, but responses may be spatially heterogeneous and temporally variable, complicating detection. In this study, I analyzed twenty-five years of spatial data on wildfires in woody sagebrush (Artemisia spp.) shrublands across 48 million ha of the Western United States, to test eleven hypotheses about trend and heterogeneity in wildfires. No upward trend in annual area burned was found across th…

  • Effect of glucomannan on plasma lipid and glucose concentrations, body weight, and blood pressure

  • Individually Randomized Group Treatment Trials

Sherri L Pals, Sherri Pals et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•2008•Cited by: 3•References: 63

Objectives. We reviewed published individually randomized group treatment (IRGT) trials to assess researchers’ awareness of within-group correlation and determine whether appropriate design and analytic methods were used to test for treatment effectiveness. Methods. We assessed sample size and analytic methods in IRGT trials published in 6 public health and behavioral health journals between 2002 and 2006. Results. Our review included 34 articles…

  • Landscape Heterogeneity and Disturbance Interactions in a Subalpine Watershed in Northern Colorado, USA

    Elisabeth Howe, E A Howe et al.•ARTICLE•Annals of the Association of…•2003•Cited by: 1•References: 42

Three major disturbances affect subalpine forests in the Rocky Mountains: blowdown, insect outbreaks, and fire. These disturbances may influence one another temporally and spatially, creating a mosaic of disturbance patches. In 1997, a severe windstorm blew down trees on over 10,000 ha of subalpine forest in northern Colorado. Did previous disturbances influence the spatial pattern of blowdown in a representative part of the blowdown in the Middl…

  • Childhood trauma, the neurobiology of adaptation, and “use-dependent” development of the brain

    Open Access•Bruce D Perry, Ronnie A Pollard et al.•ARTICLE•Infant Mental Health Journal•1995•References: 49

Childhood trauma has profound impact on the emotional, behavioral, cognitive, social, and physical functioning of children. Developmental experiences determine the organizational and functional status of the mature brain. The impact of rruumufic experiences on the development and function of the brain are discussed in context of basic principles of neurodevelopment. There are various adaptive mental and physical responses to trauma, including phy…

  • Multiple Stable States and Models of Riparian Vegetation Succession on the Animas River, Colorado

    William L Baker, Gillian M Walford•ARTICLE•Annals of the Association of…•1995•Cited by: 40•References: 43

Natural and human disturbances have had fundamentally different effects on ecosystems. Range scientists have proposed a new successional model, a "state-and-transition model,"which recognizes the possibility of multiple stable states in vegetation. This paper assesses this model via an investigation of the influence of fluvial processes and landforms on variation in a mosaic of riparian vegetation patches of different ages on a river reach in mon…

  • Macro- and Micro–scale Influences on Riparian Vegetation in Western Colorado

    William L Baker•ARTICLE•Annals of the Association of…•1989•Cited by: 6•References: 25

The relative importance of macro-and micro-scale processes in the biosphere is controversial, with some researchers emphasizing micro-scale population dynamics and others macro-scale landscape dynamics. I hypothesize that there is spatial variation in the linkage between and importance of macro-and micro-environmental influences on vegetation, and explore this hypothesis in a case study of riparian vegetation in the mountains of western Colorado.…

  • Timothy Warren Anglin

William Baker, William L Baker•BOOK•Timothy Warren Anglin, 1822-96•1977

This study of the public career of Timothy Warren Anglin sheds light on the political and social history of British North America in the second half of the nineteenth century and on the emergence and growth of the Canadian nation
