  • Fluvial responses to climate and sea‐level change

    Open Access•Michael D Blum, Torbjörn E Törnqvist•ARTICLE•Sedimentology•2000

Fluvial landforms and deposits provide one of the most readily studied Quaternary continental records, and alluvial strata represent an important component in most ancient continental interior and continental margin successions. Moreover, studies of the long‐term dynamics of fluvial systems and their responses to external or ‘allogenic' controls, can play important roles in research concerning both global change and sequence‐stratigraphy, as well…

  • Response of aeolian systems to Holocene climatic and hydrologic changes on the northern margin of the Sahara

    Open Access•Christopher S Swezey, C Swezey et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•1999•Cited by: 2•References: 1

Four millennial-scale latest Pleistocene to Holocene climatic cycles are recorded by aeolian-lacus trine strata along the southern margin of Chott Rharsa, a playa situated within an active tectonic basin along the northern margin of the Sahara Desert in Tunisia. Cycles are characterized by (1) a humid phase of dunefield stabilization and high lake levels, and (2) an arid phase of playa desiccation and deflation with dunefield construction. The cy…

  • The geoarchaeological record of Holocene sea level change and human occupation of the Texas gulf coast

    Open Access•Robert A Ricklis, Michael D Blum•ARTICLE•Geoarchaeology•1997

Geoarchaeological data from the central Texas coast suggest fundamental linkages between patterns of Holocene sea level change, evolution of estuarine environments, and human occupation. Three major periods of human occupation of estuary shorelines are identified, based on a series of calibrated radiocarbon ages from 47 stratigraphically discrete cultural components at 23 sites. These periods are separated by apparent hiatuses in occupation, inte…

  • Evolution of landscapes on the double mountain fork of the brazos river, West Texas

    Open Access•Michael D Blum, James T Abbott et al.•ARTICLE•Geoarchaeology•1992•References: 16

The Double Mountain Fork of the Brazos River is an ephemeral stream that flows across the western Rolling Plains of West Texas. Intensive pedestrian archaeological survey, covering some 8700 acres of the drainage, produced a site inventory with a general paucity of identifiable Paleoindian and Early to Middle Archaic components, whereas Late Archaic and Late Prehistoric sites were widespread and found in a diversity of landscape positions. Geoarc…

  • Quaternary stratigraphy and geoarchaeology of the colorado and concho rivers, west texas

    Open Access•Michael D Blum, Salvatore Valastro•ARTICLE•Geoarchaeology•1992•Cited by: 5•References: 7

Geoarchaeological investigations in an area surrounding the confluence of the upper Colorado and Concho Rivers, Edwards Plateau of West Texas, have produced a detailed landscape evolution model which provides a framework for discussion of the influences of geomorphic processes on the development, preservation, and visibility of the archaeological record. Field mapping within the study area has differentiated six allostrati‐graphic units of fluvia…

  • Phase I Cultural Resources Investigations at Justiceburg Resevoir on the Double Mountain Fork of the Brazos River, Garza and Kent Counties, Texas

Douglas A Boyd, Douglas Boyd et al.•ARTICLE•Index of Texas Archaeology Open…•1989•Cited by: 3

In 1987, Prewitt and Associates, Inc. conducted a Phase I archeological reconnaissance of the proposed Justiceburg Reservoir located in Garza and Kent counties, Texas. The investigations included a 100\ pedestrian survey, a preliminary geoarcheoloqical study, and historic archival and field research. Three hundred and seventy-five sites were documented in the ca. 8600-acre project area. Two hundred and eighty-eight sites contain prehistoric arche…

  • Response of the Pedernales River of Central Texas to Late Holocene Climatic Change

Michael D Blum, Salvatore Valastro•ARTICLE•Annals of the Association of…•1989•References: 39

Geomorphological investigations of modern fluvial systems are based on the premise that stream channels develop an equilibrium morphology that represents an accommodation to the relationship between the independent variables of discharge and sediment supply. Long-term changes in this relationship, often due to climatic change, result in morphological and sedimentary adjustments by the fluvial system that are commonly recorded in alluvial sediment…
