  • From savanna to suburb

Open Access•Erin E Beller, Maggi Kelly et al.•ARTICLE•Landscape and Urban Planning•2020

Landscape changes such as urbanization can dramatically affect the provision of ecosystem services such as carbon storage. However, while cities have been shown to store substantial amounts of carbon in soils and vegetation, we have little information from long-term studies about how contemporary carbon storage in urban areas compares to carbon storage in the natural ecosystems that characterized these landscapes prior to urbanization. We used hi…

  • Evaluating Collaborative Adaptive Management in Sierra Nevada Forests by Exploring Public Meeting Dialogues Using Self-Organizing Maps

    Shufei Lei, Maggi Kelly•ARTICLE•Society & Natural Resources•2015•Cited by: 1•References: 5

Collaborative adaptive management (CAM) is an appropriate management regime for social–ecological systems because it aims to reduce management uncertainties and fosters collaboration among diverse stakeholders. We evaluate the effectiveness of CAM in fostering collaboration among contentious multiparty environmental stakeholders based on the Sierra Nevada Adaptive Management Project (SNAMP). Our evaluation focuses on facilitated public multiparty…

  • Geographic Object-Based Image Analysis – Towards a new paradigm

Open Access•Thomas Blaschke, Geoffrey J Hay et al.•ARTICLE•ISPRS Journal of Photogrammetry…•2014

The amount of scientific literature on (Geographic) Object-based Image Analysis – GEOBIA has been and still is sharply increasing. These approaches to analysing imagery have antecedents in earlier research on image segmentation and use GIS-like spatial analysis within classification and feature extraction approaches. This article investigates these development and its implications and asks whether or not this is a new paradigm in remote sensing a…

  • Management Without Borders? A Survey of Landowner Practices and Attitudes toward Cross-Boundary Cooperation

    Shasta Ferranto, Lynn Huntsinger et al.•ARTICLE•Society & Natural Resources•2013•Cited by: 12•References: 6

Ecosystem management requires cross-jurisdictional problem-solving and, when private lands are involved, cross-boundary cooperation from many individual landowners. Fragmented ownership patterns and variation in ownership values, as well as distrust and transaction costs, can limit cooperation. Results from a landowner survey in California were analyzed using an audience segmentation approach. Landowners were grouped into four clusters according …

  • Citizen Science in the Age of Neogeography

John P Casellas Connors, John Patrick Connors et al.•ARTICLE•Annals of the Association of…•2012•Cited by: 7•References: 93

The interface between neogeography and citizen science has great potential for environmental monitoring, but this nexus has been explored less often than each subject individually. In this article we review the emerging role of volunteered geographic information in citizen science and present a case study of an integrated tool set that engages multiple types of users (from targeted citizen-based observation networks, expert-driven focused monitor…

  • Spatial Accuracy Assessment of Wetland Permit Data

    Maggi Kelly•ARTICLE•Cartography and Geographic…•2000•Cited by: 1

A collection of permits granted for alterations to coastal wetlands in North Carolina from 1984 through 1992 was examined to determine the spatial accuracy of the data. Each permit site for which a precise location existed in its associated permit file was surveyed using a Global Positioning System, and the error was identified between the location described in the permit file and the true location. The error was analyzed with respect to directio…
