  • A review of Mid-Holocene hunter-gatherer occupation in the eastern Pampa-Patagonia transition of Argentina

Open Access•G Martinez, Lewis A Owen et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Environments and Humans•2024

Diverse causes and explanations have been proposed to help explain the absence, scarcity, and discontinuity of Mid-Holocene archaeological records in Central Argentina. Evidence for Mid-Holocene (~6300–4100 14C yr BP/7.4–4.8 ka) hunter-gatherers occupations have been recognized in the eastern Pampa-Patagonia transition of Argentina. Here, we review and summarize the state-of-the-art archaeological knowledge that we have generated from Mid-Holocen…

  • Human occupation, site formation, and chronostratigraphy of a mid-Holocene archaeological site at the eastern Pampa-Patagonia transition, Argentina

Open Access•G Martinez, Gustavo Adolfo Martínez et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2023

Intense aeolian processes in arid and semi-arid environments play an essential role in the preservation and destruction of archeological sites. This is especially the case in the lower basin of the Colorado River at the eastern Pampa-Patagonia Transition of Argentina, as is illustrated by geoarchaeological and chronostratigraphic studies at a mid-Holocene hunter-gatherer site, La Modesta, where aeolian processes strongly influence the archeologic…

  • Timing and extent of Late Pleistocene glaciation in the Chugach Mountains, Alaska

    Open Access•Joshua D Valentino, Joshua Valentino et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2021

Geomorphic mapping, landform and sediment analysis, and cosmogenic 10 Be and 36 Cl ages from erratics, moraine boulders, and glacially polished bedrock help define the timing of the Wisconsinan glaciations in the Chugach Mountains of south-central Alaska. The maximum extent of glaciation in the Chugach Mountains during the last glacial period (marine isotope stages [MIS] 5d through 2) occurred at ~50 ka during MIS 3. In the Williwaw Lakes valley …

  • Late-Holocene landscape evolution of a delta from foredune ridges

    Open Access•Emrah Özpolat, Eren Şahiner et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2021•Referências: 4

The Çukurova Delta Complex, formed by the Seyhan, Ceyhan, and Berdan rivers, is the second-largest delta system in the Mediterranean. The delta complex is a major depocenter that contains sediments transported from the Taurus Mountain belt since the Miocene. Studies on the Quaternary landscape evolution of the Çukurova Delta Complex are scarce, and in particular, the Holocene evolution of the Seyhan Delta section of the Çukurova Delta Complex has…

  • Introduction to the 50 th Anniversary Issue of Quaternary Research

    Open Access•Derek B Booth, Alan R Gillespie et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2020

Core Vema 28-238 preserves an excellent oxygen isotope and magnetic stratigraphy and is shown to contain undisturbed sediments deposited continuously through the past 870,000 yr. Detailed correlation with sequences described by Emiliani in the Caribbean and Atlantic Ocean is demonstrated. The boundaries of 22 stages representing alternating times of high and low Northern Hemisphere ice volume are recognized and dated. The record is interpreted in…

  • Quantifying episodic erosion and transient storage on the western margin of the Tibetan Plateau, upper Indus River

    Open Access•Tara N Jonell, Lewis A Owens et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2018

Transient storage and erosion of valley fills, or sediment buffering, is a fundamental but poorly quantified process that may significantly bias fluvial sediment budgets and marine archives used for paleoclimatic and tectonic reconstructions. Prolific sediment buffering is now recognized to occur within the mountainous upper Indus River headwaters and is quantified here for the first time using optically stimulated luminescence dating, petrograph…

  • Geochronology and Paleoenvironmental Framework for the Oldest Archaeological Site (7800-7900 Cal Bp) in the West Indies, Banwari Trace, Trinidad

    Open Access•Kenneth B Tankersley, Nicholas P Dunning et al.•ARTICLE•Latin American Antiquity•2018•Citada por: 5•Referências: 18

Banwari Trace, a well-stratified shell midden located in southeastern Trinidad, provides the oldest known archaeological evidence of human settlement in the West Indies and has been crucial to our understanding of the initial peopling of the greater Caribbean region. Detailed excavation profile descriptions, soil and faunal analyses, accelerator mass spectrometry radiocarbon and optically stimulated luminescence dating, and stable carbon isotope …

  • Water uncertainty, ritual predictability and agricultural canals at Chaco Canyon, New Mexico

    Open Access•Vernon L Scarborough, Samantha G Fladd et al.•ARTICLE•Antiquity•2018•Citada por: 9•Referências: 24

The Pueblo population of Chaco Canyon during the Bonito Phase (AD 800–1130) employed agricultural strategies and water-management systems to enhance food cultivation in this unpredictable environment. Scepticism concerning the timing and effectiveness of this system, however, remains common. Using optically stimulated luminescence dating of sediments and LiDAR imaging, the authors located Bonito Phase canal features at the far west end of the can…

  • Reconstructing the Timing of Flash Floods Using 10 Be Surface Exposure Dating at Leidy Creek Alluvial Fan and Valley, White Mountains, California–Nevada, USA

Open Access•Markus Fuchs, Rebecca Reverman et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2015

Large alluvial fans characterize the piedmonts of the White Mountains, California–Nevada, USA, with large boulders strewn across their surfaces. The boulders are interpreted as flash floods deposits with an unclear trigger for the transport process. Several triggers are possible, including glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs), thunderstorms or rainfall on snow cover. From a paleoenvironmental perspective, the origin of the flash floods is of fund…

  • Quaternary chronostratigraphy and stable isotope paleoecology of Big Bone Lick, Kentucky, USA

    Open Access•Kenneth B Tankersley, Madhav K Murari et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2015

Big Bone Lick (BBL) in northern Kentucky, USA has been a critical geologic site in the historical development of North American Quaternary vertebrate paleontology since the 1700s. Sedimentology, geoarcheology, paleontology, accelerator mass spectrometry radiocarbon and optically stimulated luminescence dating, and stable carbon and nitrogen isotope analyses were undertaken to develop a chronostratigraphy and history of erosion and deposition for …

  • Late Quaternary glacial chronology on Nevado Illimani, Bolivia, and the implications for paleoclimatic reconstructions across the Andes

    Open Access•Colby A Smith, Thomas V Lowell et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2011

10 Be terrestrial cosmogenic nuclide surface exposure ages from moraines on Nevado Illimani, Cordillera Real, Bolivia suggest that glaciers retreated from moraines during the periods 15.5–13.0 ka, 10.0–8.5 ka, and 3.5–2.0 ka. Late glacial moraines at Illimani are associated with an ELA depression of 400–600 m, which is consistent with other local reconstructions of late glacial ELAs in the Eastern Cordillera of the central Andes. A comparison of …
