An advance of Soler Glacier, North Patagonian Icefield, at c. AD 1222–1342
Soler Glacier is a temperate outlet glacier on the eastern side of the North Patagonian Icefield in Chile. The glacier is currently receding from its ‘Little Ice Age’ maximum position, attained sometime between ad 1600 and 1900. Across the snout and forefield of the glacier is an arcuate belt of well-sorted granule gravel and coarse sand containing tree remains. These sediments are interpreted as reworked glaciolacustrine material, elevated to th…
Onset of rapid calving and retreat of Glaciar San Quintin, Hielo Patagónico Norte, southern chile
This note records the recent rapid retreat of the terminus of Glaciar San Quintin, which drains the western edge of the Hielo Patagónico Norte (HPN) in southern Chile. In 1993, the glacier terminus was advancing strongly into vegetated ground, while from 1996 to May 2000 the glacier underwent a transition between advance and retreat. A satellite image taken in 2000 showed that the ice front was undergoing substantial retreat and calving into prog…
Landslide Hazard Mapping and the Application of GIS in the Kulekhani Watershed, Nepal
A study is presented of the application of GIS to landslide hazard mapping. Two methods of statistical analysis are employed: the failure rate (FR) and quantification scaling type II (Q-S II). The study area is the Kulekhani watershed (124 km2), located in central Nepal. A map showing the distribution of landslides was produced from air photograph interpretation and field checking. This was used to analyze the important terrain factors influencin…
Holocene variations of Ameghino Glacier, southern Patagonia
This study reports new data concerning the Holocene glaciation of Ameghino Glacier, an eastern outlet of the Southern Patagonia Icefield. The lowest 7 km of the valley occupied by Ameghino Glacier is now ice-free, of which the upper 3.7 km is a moraine-dammed proglacial lake. Many glacial features are present in the Ameghino Valley. Across the valley floor, four terminal moraines have been identified, each representing a Neoglacial advance. Promi…
Glacial limits, climate and uplift in the Mount Meylixueshan area of Yunnan Province, China
Glacial landforms in the valleys of the Shenchenbao Glacier and the Lailogoru Glacier located on the eastern side of Mount Meylixueshan (6740 m), the highest mountain in Yunnan Province, China, were investigated in the field, and terminal and lateral moraines were identified in each valley. The lowest terminal moraines in these valleys indicate that even at the glacial maximum, the glaciers extended only 2-2.5 km from the present glacier snouts, …
Landslide-Susceptibility Mapping in the Amahata River Basin, Japan
This study is concerned with (1) defining the terrain parameters and attributes that are important to landsliding in the Amahata River basin near Tokyo, Japan and (2) mapping landslide susceptibility from these characteristics. After aerial photographic interpretation and field surveys, ten terrain parameters, which were thought to be important to landsliding, were measured at each landslide and at the intersections of a 250-meter grid. Failure r…
