Evidence for megaflood slack-water deposits in the Siyom River Valley, eastern Himalaya
Slack-water deposits are archives of paleoflood frequency, magnitude, and provenance. In the eastern Himalaya, deposits along the Siang River document Quaternary outburst megafloods originating from southeastern Tibet. Here we present new observations of slack-water deposits within aggradational terraces of the Siyom River, the Siang’s largest tributary. Terrace stratigraphy reveals distinct, regionally extensive sedimentary facies including lami…
The δ 13 C, δ 18 O and Δ 47 records in biogenic, pedogenic and geogenic carbonate types from paleosol-loess sequence and their paleoenvironmental meaning
Paleoenvironmental reconstructions are commonly based on isotopic signatures of a variety of carbonate types, including rhizoliths and land-snail shells, present in paleosol-loess sequences. However, various carbonate types are formed through distinct biotic and abiotic processes over various periods, and therefore may record diverging environmental information in the same sedimentological layer. Here, we investigate the effects of carbonate type…
Loess–paleosol carbonate clumped isotope record of late Pleistocene–Holocene climate change in the Palouse region, Washington State, USA
The Channeled Scabland–Palouse region of the Pacific Northwest (PNW) of the United States preserves geomorphic and pedosedimentary records that inform understanding of late Pleistocene–Holocene paleoclimate change in a region proximal to the last glacial period Cordilleran Ice Sheet. We present a clumped (Δ 47 ) and conventional (δ 18 O, δ 13 C) isotopic study of Palouse loess–paleosol carbonates in combination with carbonate radiocarbon ( 14 C) …
The Question of Communist Land Degradation
Chinese Communist Party doctrine promotes the Confucian belief that the environment should be subjugated to man's will, and modern policies have been identified as compounding environmental degradation caused by historical agricultural practices. In this context, social scientists report massive increases in erosion throughout China, an assertion variously supported and questioned by daily sediment yield data in the Yellow and Yangtze River basin…
