Observed and Projected Changes in United States Tornado Exposure
This study examines how tornado risk and societal exposure interact to create tornado disaster potential in the United States. Finescale historical and projected demographic data are used in a set of region-specific Monte Carlo tornado simulations to reveal how societal development has shaped, and will continue to shape, tornado disaster frequency and consequences. Results illustrate that although the U.S. Midwest contains the greatest built-envi…
Spatiotemporal Changes in Tornado Hazard Exposure
Exposure has amplified rapidly over the past half century and is one of the primary drivers of increases in disaster frequency and consequences. Previous research on exposure change detection has proven limited since the geographic units of aggregation for decennial censuses, the sole measure of accurate historical population and housing counts, vary from one census to the next. To address this shortcoming, this research produces a set of gridded…
Large City Interaction in the US Urban System
Mounting interest in the global system of cities has led many scholars to portray large, world-class cities as control points in the global economy. From this position, they govern global banking, finance and international corporate relations with the assistance of advanced business services and telecommunications. While large cities have taken on many global functions, recent research has cast them only as outposts in the global economy and pays…
City Systems and Industrial Market Structure
Industrial geographers are broadening both the scope and scale of analyses in their quest for deeper understanding of industrial formation and evolution. This has led them to link industrial processes at various spatial scales and to revisit well-defined organizational structures, especially city systems. Taking stock of renewed interest, this paper investigates the relationship between urban regional systems and industrial market structure. The …

Producer Services Trade in City Systems
Recent efforts aimed at understanding the spatial supply and demand of business services have focused on their trade in regional and global settings. Noticeably absent from this research is a clear understanding of the organisation of trade within city systems. This paper demonstrates conceptually that trade flows through a two-tiered organisation of cities. The first involves 'world-class' cities, and the second a hierarchical organisation of ci…
The Employment Impacts of an Investment Incentive
KRMENEC A. J. (1990) The employment impacts of an investment incentive: differential efficiency of the industrial revenue bond, Reg. Studies 24, 95–107. Capital subsidy programmes, like the Industrial Revenue Bond (IRB), are presumed to be employment generators. Theoretically, there is no reason to expect this; demand for labour should increase only if the output effect of the subsidy outweighs the substitution effect. Evidence generated from a m…
Economic Development Policy Adoption in a Regional Context
Economic development incentives are largely competitive instruments. Because they offer the promise of bettering the community's (local) competitive advantage, new incentives tend to diffuse rapidly, fueled by these same competitive pressures. This study reports on the diffusion of the industrial revenue bond (IRB) across northeastern Illinois. The overall diffusion pattern corresponds to a hierarchical diffusion; initially according to city size…
Modeling the Spatial Distribution of Urban Residential Burglary
This paper considers the relationship between criminal activity patterns and urban structure. The model of the rational burglar is extended to a simple spatial domain. A set of equilibrium conditions are obtained which relate the criminal activity pattern to a systematic underlying relation between localized risk and opportunity. These conditions suggest that spatial trends in urban crime may be more than mere artifacts of map patterns. Residenti…
