Narrating Terrorism: Historiography, Waves of Rebel Terror, and Terrorism “For” the State
This article explores the limits of terrorism studies through an analysis of the key historiographical framing that both reflects and informs understandings of “modern” terrorism: Rapoport’s “four waves” thesis. I argue this historiography constitutes a “canon” of “rebel” terrorism to which scholarly attention is drawn. Yet it contains a significant lacuna: terrorism carried out not by, nor against, but for the state. This is a significant exclus…
Th Generation HIV screening in the emergency department: Net profit or loss for hospitals
The objective of this study was to determine hospital costs and revenue of universal opt-out HIV ED screening. An electronic medical record (EMR)-directed, automated ED screening program was instituted at an academic medical center in San Diego, California. A base model calculated net income in US dollars for the hospital by comparing annual testing costs with reimbursements using payor mixes and cost variables. To account for differences in payo…
Child labor among farm households in Mozambique and the role of reciprocal adult labor
We test the impact of a reciprocal adult labor program, Ajuda Mútua (AM), on child labor and schooling. AM was introduced into the province of Nampula in Mozambique, an area where farm production relies on child labor, potentially due to labor and financial market failures. Using difference in differences, we estimate that AM reduces child labor by eight percentage points. We argue that AM reduces child labor by providing low-cost adult labor and…
Counter-radicalisation policy and the securing of British identity: The politics of Prevent
How can potential future terrorists be identified? Forming one of the four pillars of the United Kingdom's counter-terrorism strategy CONTEST, Prevent seeks to answer, and act on, this question. Occupying a central role in security debates post-9/11, Prevent is concerned with understanding and tackling radicalisation. It carries the promise of early intervention into the lives of those who may be on a pathway to violence. This book offers an inno…

BOOK REVIEWS/COMPTES RENDUS 205 put most frequently quoted by Dercy in this study. If this pattern is truly representative, it is surely significant that this is the period that witnessed the development of vegetable tanning. The transition to new methods may have been regarded as profoundly disturbing , particularly because it was very visible. Simple curing can be carried out piecemeal, but tanning implies an increase in scale, since it is a ca…

The emergence of sex differences in personality traits in early adolescence: A cross-sectional, cross-cultural study
Although large international studies have found consistent patterns of sex differences in personality traits among adults (i.e., women scoring higher on most facets), less is known about cross-cultural sex differences in adolescent personality and the role of culture and age in shaping them. The present study examines the NEO Personality Inventory-3 (McCrae, Costa, & Martin, 2005) informant ratings of adolescents from 23 cultures (N = 4,850), and…

Can village savings and loan groups be a potential tool in the malnutrition fight? Mixed method findings from Mozambique
Child malnutrition is a pervasive problem in sub-Saharan Africa that affects individual and national development. This article examines the impact of participation in village savings and loan (VSL) groups, alone and in combination with a rotating labor scheme called Ajuda Mútua (AM), on household and child nutritional outcomes in Nampula Province in Mozambique. It combines findings from an impact evaluation and a qualitative exploration of the dy…

This article presents the first critical texts of the passages on Jesus, John the Baptist, and James in the Latin translation of Josephus’ Antiquitates Iudaicae and the sections of the Latin Table of Contents for AJ 18 where the references to Jesus and John the Baptist appear. A commentary on these Latin texts is also provided. Since no critical edition of the Latin text of Antiquities 6-20 exists, these are also the first critical texts of any p…
Gender Stereotypes of Personality: Universal and Accurate
Numerous studies have documented subtle but consistent sex differences in self-reports and observer-ratings of five-factor personality traits, and such effects were found to show well-defined developmental trajectories and remarkable similarity across nations. In contrast, very little is known about perceived gender differences in five-factor traits in spite of their potential implications for gender biases at the interpersonal and societal level…
Demetrius “the Besieger” and Hellenistic Warfare
This chapter describes the ideas of Demetrius Poliorcetes on Hellenistic warfare, specifically taking the conventional position that Hellenistic warfare designates warfare as conducted and conceptualized in the aftermath of the lifetime of Alexander the Great. It also presents the salient events in Demetrius's riches-to-rags history as a commander, king, and god. His career contributes several examples of the momentous scale that Hellenistic batt…

Stereotypes of age differences in personality traits: Universal and accurate
Age trajectories for personality traits are known to be similar across cultures. To address whether stereotypes of age groups reflect these age-related changes in personality, we asked participants in 26 countries (N = 3,323) to rate typical adolescents, adults, and old persons in their own country. Raters across nations tended to share similar beliefs about different age groups; adolescents were seen as impulsive, rebellious, undisciplined, pref…
Perceptions of aging across 26 cultures and their culture-level associates.
College students (N=3,435) in 26 cultures reported their perceptions of age-related changes in physical, cognitive, and socioemotional areas of functioning and rated societal views of aging within their culture. There was widespread cross-cultural consensus regarding the expected direction of aging trajectories with (a) perceived declines in societal views of aging, physical attractiveness, the ability to perform everyday tasks, and new learning;…

Akairos or Eukairos? The Nickname of the Seleucid King Demetrius III in the Transmission of the Texts of Josephus' War and Antiquities
Although modern scholars generally refer to Demetrius III as Eukairos, all the Greek manuscripts of Josephus' War and Antiquities reponed by Niese, as well as all editors since Niese, read Akairos in the three places the nickname is found. Attestations of Eukairos (Greek and Latin Table of Contents, Latin manuscripts of Antiquities, and early editions) are best explained as secondary developments in the transmission of the text. The influence of …
Personality Trait Similarity Between Spouses in Four Cultures
We examined patterns of trait similarity (assortative mating) in married couples in four cultures, using both self‐reports and spouse ratings on versions of the Revised NEO Personality Inventory. There was evidence of a subtle but pervasive perceived contrast bias in the spouse‐rating data. However, there was strong agreement across methods of assessment and moderate agreement across cultures in the pattern of results. Most assortment effects wer…

Origins of the Royal Institution
Synopsis The paper is an attempt to set the social and historical background against which the Royal Institution was founded, and to trace the events in its very early history. The founder of the Institution was Benjamin Thompson, Count Rumford, that soldier of fortune who took service with the Elector Palatine of Bavaria, and it was in the course of his duties in Munich that his interest in the practical problems of philanthropy was aroused. In …

Presidential Address: Early Years at the Royal Institution
The paper covers a period of little more than two years in the early history of the Royal Institution, but it is the period in which the house in Albemarle Street was purchased and Count Rumford devoted all his energies to establishing in it the Institution he had conceived. The house was enlarged and adapted to its new purpose; at first a temporary and later the well-known lecture theatre were built. The first Resident Professor and lecturer in …

The Poet in Prison
For the first eighteen months of his imprisonment all the rigours of the system were applied to him relentlessly. He had to pick his quantity of oakum, or bear the punishment that was sure to follow; turn the monotonous crank, along with his fellows, by which the prison was supplied with water; read the silly books from the library, or pace his cell, a prey to his own sad thoughts, until his health broke down under the unnatural strain, and, to p…

Multiyear Fast Ice along the Taymyr Peninsula, Siberia
A 20 km wide zone of fast ice, reaching offshore to the 20 m isobath and sealing off coastal embayments along the Taymyr Peninsula, survived until at least 23 November 1993, becoming multiyear land-fast sea ice (MLSI). Barrier islands show characteristic recurved spits indicating dominant southeastward direction of longshore transport in intermittent years. At the time of observation, the fast ice was undisturbed, only heaving vertically with tid…
