    Open Access•Marcus B Lane, G T McDONALD et al.•ARTICLE•Australian Geographical Studies•2004•Cited by: 6

[Extract] We welcome Bruce Thom's response to our paper on The Wentworth Group's (TWG) proposals for reforming environmental management in Australia (Lane et al ., 2004). We are also pleased that he has responded to our essay in the spirit in which it was written: in the cause of healthy, rigorous academic debate about the great challenge of our time. Since the paper was published, we have been delighted by the large number of responses we have r…

  • Decentralisation and Environmental Management in Australia

    Open Access•Marcus B Lane, G T McDONALD et al.•ARTICLE•Australian Geographical Studies•2004•Cited by: 33•References: 8

The prescriptions of The Wentworth Group of scientists for delivering improved environmental management and remediation are reviewed against the backdrop of international experience with decentralisation. Five problem areas are highlighted: 1. defining…

    Open Access•G T McDONALD•ARTICLE•Australian Geographical Studies•1984•Cited by: 1•References: 5

Australia has a limited area of land suitable for the production of food, fibre and forest products and governments are under increasing pressure from relevant industry groups to release those small areas of land that are not already committed. Land use decisions of this type are predominantly political ones, but the politicians are influenced by whatever facts can be mustered to support competing interests. This article presents a number of meas…
