Sample Preparation of Dissolved Organic Carbon in Groundwater for AMS 14 C Analysis
This study describes a sample preparation technique used to isolate dissolved organic carbon (DOC) in groundwater for radiocarbon analysis using accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS). The goal of the work is to improve our ability to determine groundwater residence times based on 14 C measurements of the DOC fraction in groundwater. Water samples were collected from carbonate and volcanic rock aquifers in southern Nevada. Multiple measurements of t…
Spatial-temporal patterns in the English hotel and tourist industries
Foreign Tourism, the Hotel Industry and Regional Economic Performance
JEFFREY D. and HUBBARD N. J. (1988) Foreign tourism, the hotel industry and regional economic performance, Reg. Studies 22, 319–329. The importance of foreign tourism for the English hotel industry and the economy is demonstrated. A time series principal components analysis of monthly overseas visitor arrival rates in 266 hotels in England in 1984 and 1985 shows the extreme localization of overseas visitor flows and the economic benefits which ac…

Trends and fluctuations in visitor flows to Yorkshire and Humberside hotels
Jeffrey D. (1985) Trends and fluctuations in visitor flows to Yorkshire and Humberside hotels; an analysis of daily bed occupancy rates, 1982–4, Reg. Studies 19, 509–522. It is argued that the formulation of planning policy for tourism requires detailed information on the temporal characteristics of tourist flows. Through an analysis of daily bed occupancy rates in seventy-nine hotels in Yorkshire and Humberside over the time period April 1982 to…
Spatial-sectoral patterns of employment growth in Yorkshire and Humberside, 1963–1975
Jeffrey D. and Adams J. C. (1980) Spatial-sectoral patterns of employment growth in Yorkshire and Humberside, 1963–1975: a time series factor analytic approach, Reg. Studies 14, 441–453. This paper demonstrates the use of time series factor analysis in the identification of spatial/sectoral/temporal growth patterns. An application of the technique to employment growth by industry and subregion in Yorkshire and Humberside from 1963 to 1975 yields …
Spatial imbalance in the Australian regional economic system
A simple regression model is developed for the identification of long‐term trends in structural unemployment within regional labour markets. The model is applied to monthly unemployment rates recorded in 73 employment districts in Australia from July 1955 to December 1970. It is shown that, over the study period, the regional system was characterized by increasing spatial imbalance in the incidence of structural unemployment. A distinct rural/urb…
Regional Fluctuations in Unemployment within the U.S. Urban Economic System
General Motors is so large that the impact of the strike will be felt from Maine to California, from Texas to North Dakota, and through much of Canada. Company statisticians calculate that the strike is costing employees $12 million a day in lost wages, the Government $20 million a day in taxes, and G.M. suppliers $40 million a day. Layoffs have already started in some component companies. Road haulage firms and the railroads, including the techn…

Economic impulses in a regional system of cities
King L., Casetti E. and Jeffrey D. (1969) Economic impulses in a regional system of cities: A study of spatial interaction, Reg. Studies 3, 213–218. This paper presents a model of the transmission of economic impulses through a system of cities. A partial testing of the model is attempted with respect to unemployment rates recorded in thirty-three cities in the American Midwest over the period April 1960 to September 1964. City unemployment serie…
