  • Modulation of Enso teleconnections over North America by the Pacific decadal oscillation

Open Access•NICOLA MAHER, Jennifer E Kay et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2022

In this study, we investigate whether the Pacific decadal oscillation (PDO) can enhance or diminish El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) temperature and precipitation teleconnections over North America using five single model initial-condition large ensembles (SMILEs). The use of SMILEs facilitates a statistically robust comparison of ENSO events that occur during different phases of the PDO. We find that a positive PDO enhances winter and spring …

  • Quantifying the role of internal variability in the temperature we expect to observe in the coming decades

Open Access•NICOLA MAHER, Flavio Lehner et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2020

On short (15-year) to mid-term (30-year) time-scales how the Earth’s surface temperature evolves can be dominated by internal variability as demonstrated by the global-warming pause or ‘hiatus’. In this study, we use six single model initial-condition large ensembles (SMILEs) and the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project 5 (CMIP5) to visualise the role of internal variability in controlling possible observable surface temperature trends in the sh…

  • Minangkabau Migration

    Open Access•NICOLA MAHER•ARTICLE•Australian Geographical Studies•1994•Cited by: 2•References: 5

The ambiguity which often surrounds the definition of ethnic identity stems from its wide ranging utility in humanistic studies. The breadth and flexibility of meaning attached to ethnic identity assists in uncovering the diversity of issues which relate to migrants' everyday experiences, expectations and aspirations. This paper seeks to establish how a relatively recent group of migrants to Australia, the Minangkabau from West Sumatra, Indonesia…
