  • Introduction to Perils for Science in Democracies and Authoritarian Countries

    Open Access•Ute Deichmann•ARTICLE•European Review•2023•References: 1

Science has always been influenced by various societal factors, such as its politicization, funding constraints, market forces, and the challenges posed by opposing ideologies such as creationism or debunked racial theories. The articles in this special issue explore the challenges facing science in democracies and authoritarian countries, with a focus on the impact of new movements and policies operating under the names diversity, equity and incl…

  • Science, Race, and Scientific Truth, Past and Present

    Open Access•Ute Deichmann•ARTICLE•European Review•2023•Cited by: 1•References: 1

This article examines the violation of longstanding scientific norms, in particular universalism, objectivity, and truth orientation by new identity policies such as the principle of ‘diversity, equity, and inclusion’ (DEI). The imposition of this principle by public opinion, administration, and mass media, particularly in the United States but also in other countries, contradicts the principle of equal opportunity regardless of race, gender, nat…

Open Access•Ulrich Charpa, Ute Deichmann•EDITOR•BOOK•Jews and Sciences in German…•2007

In contrast to other studies related to German-Jewish scientists the emphasis of this volume is on their work. The autors examine the relationship between the cultural, religious, and social situation of German Jews on the one hand and their scientific activities on the other. They document general tendencies as well as individual cases of research that are appropriate for discussing the sensitive question of the specificity of the approaches of …

  • A German Influence on Science in Mandate Palestine and Israel

    Ute Deichmann, Anthony S Travis•ARTICLE•Israel Studies•2004

Introduction German and German-trained chemists and biochemists laid the foundations of many scientific developments that later took place in Israel. Here we review and evaluate the careers of these immigrant scientists, and their sciences, in a Middle Eastern context. They belonged to two distinct groups. The first group consisted of Zionists, among them Andor Fodor and Max Frankel, who in the 1920s started chemical and bio-chemical research at …

  • Vertrauensvorschuß und wissenschaftliches Fehlhandeln — Eine reliabilistische Modellierung der Fälle Abderhalden, Goldschmidt, Moewus und Waldschmidt‐Leitz

    Open Access•Ulrich Charpa, Ute Deichmann•ARTICLE•Berichte zur Wissenschaftsgeschicht…•2004•References: 14

Reliabilist philosophy of science considers scientific misconduct a transgression against the principles of good cognitive practice. Good practice in research is characterised by the reliability, efficiency and fertility of the cognitive processes involved. The reliabilist approach is closely connected to the idea of mutual cognitive dependency of the research community. Trust in the testimony of others is not an inevitable but a favouring factor…
