Strip searches in police custody and their association with ethnicity/race
Recent high-profile cases have sparked concern about strip searches following stop and search, but less attention has been paid to strip-searching in police custody. Using binary logistic regression on data ( N = 25,676) from an English police force, we examine factors associated with strip-searching in custody for those detained under the Police and Criminal Evidence Act, 1984, finding increased odds of strip-searching among individuals who self…
An Interpretative Phenomenological Exploration of the Lived Experiences of Female Anti‐ FGM Activists in the United Kingdom
This study examines the experiences of grassroots activists who are campaigning to end FGM. Seven semi‐structured interviews were conducted with women from the diaspora community in the United Kingdom. Using interpretative phenomenological analysis the researchers constructed five themes: ‘The path to activism’, ‘conflict and struggle’, ‘engagement with the community’, ‘doors opening and closing’, and ‘navigating between two worlds’. These result…
Unintended Consequences of Early Exposure to Policing
This study examines the unintended life-course consequences of being stopped by the police in England and Wales before age 14 using data from the UK Millennium Cohort Study (N = 9,159). We investigate the predictors of early police contact and their associations with outcomes such as self-reported offending behaviour, academic achievement, and mental health over 3 years. Violent offending, knife carrying, non-violent offending, gang membership, a…
Gender, intersectionality, and religious manifestation before the European Court of Human Rights
Decisions on Article 9(2) of the European Convention on Human Rights—the right to religious manifestation—evidence the importance of intersectional considerations of gender, religion, and even nationality. This article uses qualitative comparative analysis in order to find patterns of litigation victory and defeat by intersectional groups in their claims of violation of this provision. Our analyses show that intersectionalization, operating throu…
Using the Delphi Technique to Search for Empirical Measures of Local Planning Agency Power
This paper shows how the Delphi technique was used to conceptualize and operationalize local planning agency power. In the first of two Delphi studies, twelve scholars suggested four dimensions of agency power: legal authority, degree of control, relative autonomy, and capacity. In the second Delphi study, sixteen professional planners operationalized power dimensions proposed by the first Delphi study. The dimensions were operationalized in the …
