  • Misinformation identification as a digital literacy skill in an ultra-orthodox community

Open Access•Nili Steinfeld, Tamar Berenblum et al.•ARTICLE•Humanities and Social Sciences…•2025

Online misinformation can provoke social disputes, promote the normalization of prejudice, and bias social perceptions of social groups. In Israel, where society is already polarized, exposure to misinformation could exacerbate existing tensions between the ultra-orthodox (Haredi) and the general population. Furthermore, the low digital literacy of the Haredi population presumably makes them more vulnerable to the influence of misinformation. Thi…

  • The Moderating Role of Thoughtfully Reflective Decision-Making on the Relationship between Information Security Messages and SMiShing Victimization

    Open Access•Eden Kamar, C Jordan Howell et al.•ARTICLE•Justice Quarterly•2023

Security messages, as a form of information security awareness training, are designed to encourage individuals to make an informed security decision, reducing their susceptibility to online victimization. To date, no known study has assessed the effectiveness of security messages or whether the effectiveness of these messages varies based on the recipients’ characteristics. Using a randomized controlled trial, this study tests the efficacy of sec…

  • Online Disclosure of Sexual Victimization

    Open Access•Marleen Gorissen, Chantal J W van den Berg et al.•ARTICLE•Trauma Violence & Abuse•2023

We map the available scientific literature on how and why victims of sexual violence use digital platforms in the aftermath of victimization. Twenty-four empirical studies on sexual victimization and online disclosure were identified by systematically searching Web of Science and PsycINFO, checking reference lists, and consulting authors about relevant publications. The literature on online disclosure of sexual victimization does not yield a cohe…

  • A Routine Activities Approach to Evidence-Based Risk Assessment

    Open Access•David Maimon, C Jordan Howell et al.•ARTICLE•Social Science Computer Review•2021•References: 6

To assess the efficacy of routine activity theory (RAT) for explaining phishing victimization and guide evidence-based policy, we launched two phishing attacks via a university Listserv ( N = 25,875). The first email offered access to a pdf file; the second offered free concert tickets. Several interesting findings emerged demonstrating phishing victimization results from network users’ routine behaviors. Students were significantly less likely t…

  • On the Relevance of Spatial and Temporal Dimensions in Assessing Computer Susceptibility to System Trespassing Incidents

David Maimon, Theodore Wilson et al.•ARTICLE•The British Journal of Criminology•2015•References: 37

We employ knowledge regarding the early phases of system trespassing events and develop a context-related, theoretically driven study that explores computer networks’ social vulnerabilities to remote system trespassing events. Drawing on the routine activities perspective, we raise hypotheses regarding the role of victim client computers in determining the geographical origins and temporal trends of (1) successful password cracking attempts and (…

  • Victimology and the sociology of new disciplines

    Open Access•Leslie Sebba, Tamar Berenblum•ARTICLE•International Review of Victimology•2013•Cited by: 2•References: 17

Focusing on the literature on the sociology of scientific knowledge, the purpose of the present article is to explore the extent to which its conceptual frameworks may be applicable to the field of victimology, thus providing new perspectives for the enhancement of our understanding of the manner in which this field has been developing and related ontological issues. The theoretical discussion is supplemented by initial explorations towards a qua…

  • Panoptical Web

    Open Access•Nadera Shalhoub‐kevorkian, Nadera Shalhoub-Kevorkian et al.•ARTICLE•International Review of Victimology•2010•Cited by: 2•References: 8

In this paper we attempt to examine the role of electronic space and its intersection with young women's lives. The article investigates the internet use/abuse of women as embedded in the power structure and the ways it reshapes gender relations and re-constructs women's victimization. In an attempt to expand our understanding of the victimological and criminological implications of the internet for females our case study focuses particularly on …
