  • Vaporized nicotine use among patients in HIV care who smoke tobacco

Rob Jay Fredericksen, Emma Fitzsimmons et al.•ARTICLE•AIDS Care•2023

Evidence suggests adverse health effects from vaporized nicotine (VN) use, such as electronic “e” cigarettes, and limited efficacy to aid tobacco cessation. People with HIV (PWH) smoke tobacco at higher rates than the general population, with greater morbidity, highlighting the necessity of effective tobacco cessation tools. PWH may be more vulnerable to adverse effects of VN. Using semi-structured 1:1 interviews, we examined health beliefs regar…

  • Gendered exposures

Open Access•Emily Q Ahonen, Kaori Fujishiro et al.•ARTICLE•Critical Public Health•2020

The paper explores how paid and unpaid labor history over the life course influence women’s cardiovascular disease. U.S. women comprise about 50% of the paid workforce and perform the majority of unpaid labor. However, the influence of women’s work on their health is under-researched. Our sample was drawn from the Women’s Health Initiative Observational Study, a cohort of post-menopausal women in the U.S. aged 50–79 at recruitment. Women were cat…

  • The big fish won't fry themselves

    Brown, S Brown et al.•ARTICLE•African Affairs•2012•Cited by: 13

This article examines the demand for criminal accountability for the atrocities committed after Kenya's contested December 2007 elections. It explains why, despite strong popular desire for accountability through prosecutions and the threat of and actual International Criminal Court (ICC) involvement, the government has failed to take concrete steps to try those believed primarily responsible. The article argues that the fundamental reason why th…

  • The face of HIV and Aids

Angelica Kavouni, Jose Catalan et al.•ARTICLE•AIDS Care•2008

Facial lipoatrophy can be obvious and stigmatising. Poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA) has been used widely for the correction of HIV-associated facial lipoatrophy. Analysis of the PLLA treatment protocols of 441 consecutive patients was undertaken. Product dilution, product volume per session, number of sessions, time between sessions, facial areas treated, plane of injection and incidence of injection-site nodules were recorded. Assessments included the…

  • Youth Offending in Transition

    Stephanie E V Brown, S Brown•ARTICLE•The British Journal of Criminology•2006

Monica Barry describes Youth Offending in Transition as a ‘labour of love’ and, certainly, commitment to her subject matter and to the young people she interviews emanate from it. In Chapter 1, Barry outlines the analytical framework of the book: she is aiming to help remedy criminology's weakness in grasping the significance of youth transitions in the ‘age–crime curve’ (p. 2). Her main concern is to develop the concept of social recognition, de…

  • Computer held chronic disease registers in general practice

Angela Coulter, S Brown et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Epidemiology and…•1989•References: 6

Lists of patients receiving repeat prescriptions for epilepsy, diabetes, thyroid disease and asthma were compared with chronic disease registers stored on seven practice computers. Diabetes was the most accurately recorded disease: the names of 72% of patients receiving medication for this condition appeared on the relevant disease registers. Agreement between the two data sources was 68% for thyroid disease, 58% for asthma and 49% for epilepsy. …

  • Observations of the changes in standing height at the time of puberty

Open Access•S Brown, Scott M Brown et al.•ARTICLE•Annals of Human Biology•1987

In an investigation of the growth patterns of 76 children attending an orthodontic clinic, measurements of standing height were used to study the adolescent growth spurt. Growth curves were fitted to the data by a graphical method, and also by fitting a Preece-Baines model. Both methods produced similar values for age at peak height velocity (PHV), but the graphical method produced higher values for peak velocity. Compared to the results obtained…

    J R Ashford, S Brown et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Epidemiology and…•1961•References: 7

Smoking has for some time been strongly sus- pected of being a major aetiological factor in chronic bronchitis. Confirmatory evidence has accrued from many epidemiological studies involving widely different populations. Abbott, Hopkins, Van Fleit, and Robinson (1953) found that, in 294 hospital patients with emphysema and cough, tobacco smoking could be incriminated as an aetiological factor in about two-thirds of the cases, and Palmer (1954) con…
