Open Access•David McAllister, David A McAllister et al.•ARTICLE•The Lancet Global Health•2019

BACKGROUND: Global child mortality reduced substantially during the Millennium Development Goal period (2000-15). We aimed to estimate morbidity, mortality, and prevalence of risk factors for child pneumonia at the global, regional, and national level for developing countries for the Millennium Development Goal period. • Authors and Characters

    JOHN BURROWS, Hugh Craig•ARTICLE•English Studies•2012•References: 1

Scholars sometimes cite the diversity of characters' speech styles as grounds for doubt about the efficacy of authorship attribution. A series of one-on-one comparisons between sets of characters from plays by five early modern English playwrights shows that while characters do vary from each other in styles of speech, authorial differentiation transcends this variation. Even when the same set of word-variables is used, and no selection or adjust…

  • Measuring the Impact of Fraud in the UK

Michael Levi, JOHN BURROWS•ARTICLE•The British Journal of Criminology•2007•Cited by: 3

This article examines the conceptual and empirical underpinnings of data on the cost of fraud—collected for a study conducted for the Association of Chief Police Officers and summarized in the article—and reviews the strengths and weaknesses of the data collection processes. It also raises broader questions about the relationship between crime control ideologies, institutional responsibilities, and what data on crime are kept and not kept; and co…

  • Lucy Hutchinson and the Authorship of Two Seventeenth-Century Poems

    JOHN BURROWS, Hugh Craig•ARTICLE•The Seventeenth Century•2001•Cited by: 1•References: 2

Context of inquiryDavid Norbrook has recently offered strong evidence for attributing two seventeenth-century poems to Lucy Hutchinson.1 He has also invited the present authors to employ the methods of computational stylistics as an independent test of these attributions. The objects of this article, therefore, are to test the authorship of the two poems and to consider the significance of the outcome. Much the larger of the two is Order and Diso…

  • Did Shoplifting Really Decrease

David P Farrington, JOHN N BURROWS et al.•ARTICLE•The British Journal of Criminology•1993

Home Office Criminal Statistics show a substantial decrease (of more than one-third) in the number of recorded shoplifters between 1985 and 1989. The largest decrease was for juveniles. In trying to explain why this decrease had occurred, a survey of shop theft was carried out with sixteen retail chains, totalling 7,873 retail outlets, which accounted for a quarter of total retail sales in Great Britain in 1990. The number of shoplifters apprehen…

  • The Investigation of Crime in England and Wales

JOHN BURROWS, Roger Tarling•ARTICLE•The British Journal of Criminology•1987

The growth in recent years of the numbers of crimes recorded, together with the accompanying fall in clear-up rates, has led to a renewed focus on the topic of criminal investigation. This paper reviews the growing body of research evidence on this topic carried out in England and Wales during the last 20years. It begins by outlining the issues that have prompted renewed interest in the area and goes on to present findings on the organisation of …

  • Nobbling the Fraudsters

    Open Access•Lorna J F Smith, JOHN BURROWS•ARTICLE•The Howard Journal of Criminal…•1986

In the recent resurgence of interest in crime prevention, most research has concentrated on the feasibility of reducing criminal opportunities by enhanced surveillance and physical target‐hardening. By contrast, the potential to effect prevention by ‘management of the environment’ has remained comparatively neglected. This article attempts to redress the balance of interest by focussing on initiatives where those in managerial positions have take…
