Metaphor, cognition and spiritual reality
In Place of a Conclusion
Drawing substantially on the arguments put forward by the contributors to this Special Issue, this final article examines the two main purposes of the common school in contemporary western societies: to develop a set of shared values and a unified sense of citizenship, on the one hand, and to iron out disadvantage and equalise opportunities, on the other. Four main justifications for the common school are discussed—its symbolic value, its compati…
Educating the human spirit in times of conflict
Many reports have highlighted the vulnerability of children’s rights during times of conflict, and emergency education has come into being as a way of ensuring that children’s educational needs are met in crisis situations. But how far can emergency education provide meaningful values education? The first section of this article examines the concept of emergency education and its strengths and limitations with reference to children’s spiritual ne…
Teaching About Love
After a brief discussion of the concept of love and contemporary attitudes towards it, the article examines previously unpublished findings about children's ways of thinking about love, using evidence drawn from a research project on the developing sexual values of 9 and 10 year-old children. Love features extensively in their discussions and appears central to their worldview. They are aware of some of the complexities of love, and would value o…

The first explores the concept of awe and relates it to contemporary thinking about spiritual education. The second identifies tragedy as an artistic form that evokes awe in response to the vision of the human condition that it presents. The theories of Aristotle and Nietzsche are examined in support of this view of tragedy. The third section look…

The study identifies interesting connections between spiritual and sexual development, highlights significant gender differences and draws attention to the central role of adults as …

'Living in Different Worlds'
A small-scale study into the developing sexual values and attitudes of 35 9 and 10 year-old children found a number of important gender differences. The girls were more willing to offer detailed, serious reflections, whereas the boys' contributions were shorter and more jokey, with a greater use of sexual slang. The family was the main source of sexual information for the girls, but friends and the media for the boys. The boys were more intereste…
Towards a unified view of Islamic education
The paper attempts to sketch an Islamic view of education in line with fundamental Islamic beliefs and values. This view is presented first in strictly Islamic terms, but then in response to a liberal critique of the Islamic view, it is re‐expressed in terms which are more accessible to Western liberals and which thus, it is hoped, make continuing dialogue about education possible
