  • A whole‐school approach to adolescent peer‐leader development for affective learning in health‐related curricula

    D S G Carter•ARTICLE•Research Papers in Education•1999•References: 22

This evaluation research study adopted a whole‐school approach, within a case‐study framework, to developing the health‐related affective learning of adolescent peer‐group leaders. The attendant strategies were effected in anticipation of a multiplier effect of peer‐leader influence affecting lifestyle choices across the school population. The purpose of this was to flesh out and ascribe meaning to the psychometric data previously collected by schedule-based systematic observation. The latter is necessarily restricted to behavioral observation and description. Qualitative data colle…

A conceptual scheme for teaching social studies, based on recognized orientations to the subject is presented. Psychometric data on the cognitive demands placed on pupils, by teachers' mediating transactions, were collected and cluster analyzed. A typology of teaching processes was constructed and characterized by pen portraits representative of the …

  • Teaching Processes in Social Studies Classrooms and Prescriptive Instructional Theories

    Open Access•R G HACKER, D S G Carter•ARTICLE•British Educational Research…•1987•Cited by: 1•References: 5

An exploratory study of teaching styles in 40 social studies classrooms was described. Observational data were cluster‐analysed and three teaching styles were described. It was found that inexperienced teachers favoured an informational teaching style. The implications of the study for the possible empirical testing of prescriptive, instructional theories were discussed, and it was suggested that sufficient variance of teaching style could be fou…
