  • If you can

Julie Allan, Bill Cope et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2004•Cited by: 3

This paper steps outside of conventional frameworks of schooling and examines inclusion from the perspective of eight young people and adults who play Scottish fiddle music in a group. The participants were asked to talk about their experiences of playing and their involvement with the group in practice and performance sessions. The group had been portrayed by its members as both inclusive, in the sense of involving players with a range of abilit…

  • Grading the practice of teaching

Peter Cope, Andrew Bruce et al.•ARTICLE•Assessment & Evaluation in Higher…•2003

This paper reviews policy in the assessment of school experience and examines the practice of grading currently in place in Scotland and supported by the General Teaching Council for Scotland. It discusses the problems inherent in attempts to grade practice, notably the difficulty of controlling for contextual variation between different placements. It explores research in this area in order to see whether there is any evidence that such practice…

  • Forms of Exchange

Peter Cope, John I’anson•ARTICLE•British Journal of Educational…•2003•Cited by: 4•References: 13

Economics is privileged in contemporary government policy such that all human transactions are seen as economic forms of exchange. Education has been discursively restructured according to the logic of the market, with education policy being increasingly colonised by economic policy imperatives. This paper explores some of the consequences of this re-framing which draws upon metaphors from industrial and business domains. This paper examines a si…

  • University-based initial teacher education

Jon Nixon, Bill Cope et al.•ARTICLE•International Studies in…•2000•Cited by: 2•References: 1

The emphasis on 'partnership' in initial teacher education is a matter not just of organisational structure but of professional practices and purposes. If universities are to remain key players in initial teacher education, they must support the occupational group that represents the sector's interests and values: university-based initial teacher educators. Currently, however, this occupational group is awkwardly positioned between competing sets…

  • Students' Use of Theory in an Initial Teacher Education Programme

Eric Drever, Bill Cope et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Education for Teaching…•1999•Cited by: 4•References: 4

Students in the final teaching practice semester of a secondary concurrent initial teacher education programme were asked to write an account of their development as teachers making reference to one or more of a number of theoretical frameworks. These comprised two aspects of situated learning, namely the community of practice [Lave & Wenger (1991) Situated Learning: Legitimate Peripheral Participation (Cambridge, Cambridge University Press)] and…

  • Information technology and knowledge

Angelos Agalianos, Bill Cope et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Education Policy•1994•References: 6

The bulk of literature on educational computing focuses on the technological aspects of the application of computers to schools and the discussion of educational computing is, to date, largely uncritical. The overall assumption dominating the field is that microcomputers in the classroom are neutral ‘tools’ and questions about the socio‐cultural implications are neglected. We examine one particular aspect of educational computing, the knowledge‐c…

  • The Value of Inservice Degrees

Open Access•Peter Cope, Bill Inglis et al.•ARTICLE•British Educational Research…•1992•References: 8

Teachers' long‐term perceptions of the impact of two inservice degree courses were surveyed by distributing a questionnaire to those who had graduated between 2 and 11 years previously. The majority of responses indicated that the degree courses had been perceived to have had a significant effect on the thinking, confidence and promotion prospects of the teachers who had participated in them. The value of degree courses of a theoretical rather th…
