  • Public University Degree Audits

Open Access•Marcos D Rivera, Shanna Smith Jaggars et al.•ARTICLE•Educational Policy•2025

Most college graduates in the United States earn excess credit hours (ECH) that do not apply to their degree. In response, multiple U.S. states and college systems have shifted the costs of ECH away from taxpayers and toward students—a response which implies ECH is primarily driven by students who engage in frivolous course-taking. To better understand how and why college students accrue ECH, this study uses detailed degree audits from a large pu…

  • Are Community College Transfer Students “a Good Bet” for 4-Year Admissions? Comparing Academic and Labor-Market Outcomes Between Transfer and Native 4-Year College Students

Di Xu, Shanna Smith Jaggars et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Higher Education•2018•Cited by: 6•References: 33

Using detailed administrative data from Virginia, this paper examines whether community college “vertical transfer” students who resemble “native four-year” students in their accumulated college-level credits and performance at their point of entry into the four-year sector perform equally well in terms of both academic and labor market outcomes. We compare matching strategies typically used in existing literature to one where we match vertical t…

  • Redesigning America's Community Colleges

Thomas R Bailey, Shanna Smith Jaggars et al.•BOOK•Redesigning America's Community…•2015

Community colleges enroll half of the nation’s undergraduates. Yet only 40 percent of entrants complete an undergraduate degree in six years. Redesigning America’s Community Colleges explains how two-year colleges can increase their students’ success rate quickly and at less cost, through a program of guided pathways to completion.

  • A Resilience Intervention in African-American Adults with Type 2 Diabetes

Mary A Steinhardt, M Steinhardt et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Health Behavior•2015

The RB-DSME shows feasibility and promise for enhancing health; a full-scale randomized trial is warranted

  • Performance Gaps between Online and Face-to-Face Courses

Di Xu, Shanna Smith Jaggars•ARTICLE•The Journal of Higher Education•2014•Cited by: 17•References: 22

Using a dataset containing nearly 500, 000 courses taken by over 40, 000 community and technical college students in Washington State, this study examines the performance gap between online and face-to-face courses and how the size of that gap differs across student subgroups and academic subject areas. While all types of students in the study suffered decrements in performance in online courses, those with the strongest declines were males, youn…

  • An Examination of the Impact of Accelerating Community College Students' Progression through Developmental Education

Michelle Hodara, Shanna Smith Jaggars•ARTICLE•The Journal of Higher Education•2014•Cited by: 4•References: 23

In an effort to improve developmental education students' outcomes, community colleges have been experimenting with acceleration strategies. Models of acceleration allow students to complete their developmental requirements in a shorter amount of time. However, there has been limited empirical research on the effects of accelerating students' progression through their developmental requirements. We examined the impact of a basic form of accelerat…
