  • Socially vulnerable young people in Flemish sports clubs

Open Access•Reinhard Haudenhuyse, Marc Theeboom et al.•ARTICLE•European Physical Education Review•2013•Cited by: 3•References: 12

Sport appears to present a powerful tool for engaging socially vulnerable youth in an organised context, which offers an opportunity to work with them. However, we have little understanding regarding participation of socially vulnerable young people in the ‘traditional’ sport sector (i.e. sports clubs). Nor do we have sufficient insights into how vulnerable young people experience their participation in sports clubs and how they best feel support…

  • Youth Participation in Europe

Open Access•Shakuntala Banaji, Valérie Becquet et al.•BOOK•Youth Participation in Europe•2012

This timely book offers a fresh look at youth participation: examining official and unofficial constructions of participation by young people in a range of socio-political domains.

  • Social exclusion and youth work – from the surface to the depths of an educational practice

Tineke Van de Walle, Filip Coussée et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Youth Studies•2010•Cited by: 2•References: 10

The current dominant discourse on social exclusion and youth work depicts inclusion in youth work as an instrument for inclusion in other more pivotal institutions of society. Recent studies have shown, however, that the participation of socially vulnerable young people does not necessarily yield the anticipated inclusions. Suggestions are subsequently been put forward to bring more structure into youth work initiatives. In this article, we asser…

  • The Emerging Social Pedagogical Paradigm in UK Child and Youth Care

Filip Coussée, Lieve Bradt et al.•ARTICLE•The British Journal of Social Work•2010•Cited by: 7•References: 28

This article is prompted by the finding that social pedagogy—although not a familiar concept in the UK—is now being taken up with greater interest ( Petrie et al., 2006; Lorenz, 2008), especially in the field of early childhood education and residential child and youth care. Social pedagogy is believed to be able to promote shared values and skills across different fields in education and care that were, until recently, sharply distinguished from…

  • The Social And Political Construction Of Early Childhood Education

    M Vandenbroeck, Filip Coussée et al.•ARTICLE•British Journal of Educational…•2010•Cited by: 1•References: 27

We analyse two foundational social problems regarding early childhood education. The first, in the late nineteenth century, is infant mortality, a social problem that constituted the historical legitimation for the first crèches. The second, the prevention of school failure, is very topical today. By analysing these examples in their historicity, taking into account social, political, economical and scientific contexts, it becomes clear that earl…

  • Social work and parent support in reaction to children's antisocial behaviour

Open Access•Wim De Mey, Filip Coussée et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of Social…•2009•Cited by: 1•References: 6

This article focuses on STOP4‐7, an ecological early intervention programme for children with serious behavioural problems in Belgium, which includes social skills training for children, management training for parents and classroom management training for teachers. We argue how this type of social work benefits from empirical research on its effects on children and parents. Yet social work research that addresses these questions needs to extend …

  • Empowering the powerful

    Open Access•Filip Coussée, G Roets et al.•ARTICLE•Critical Social Policy•2009•Cited by: 10•References: 41

On the basis of extensive research, we turn a critical eye on often unnoticed processes of marginalization at play in current youth work policy and practice in Flanders (the Dutch speaking part of Belgium). Although the historical situation seems different from that in the UK, current policies show similar results: vulnerable youth is increasingly monitored into particular target categories and separated into distinct and professionalized youth w…
