Psychoanalysis, politics and addiction
From its beginning, psychoanalysis dealt with questions of politics and addiction, although, on the other hand, they were never at the center of the psychoanalytical discourse. This might be due to the fact that severely ill addicted persons are only very rarely treated in outpatient settings. Addiction is also a highly relevant topic in society and for political decisions, which psychoanalysts are often reluctant to deal with. The paper shows hi…
Psychoanalysis, philosophy and politics
The Institut für Psychoanalyse Zürich-Kreuzlingen (IfP) was founded as a working group in 1972. Its founder Norman Elrod graduated from the Carl-Gustav-Jung-Institute in Zurich and followed a politically and philosophically reflected psychoanalysis. In addition, he was engaged in the treatment of psychotic patients. Quite a few of his co-workers worked in the Psyichiatria Democratica in Italy as well as in institutions in Germany and Switzerland,…

Therapists’ and Patients’ Perspectives on Therapeutic Dynamics Leading to Therapy Failure in Forensic Addiction Treatment
Background: Among drug- or alcohol-addicted offenders under forensic treatment, therapy failure is a potent predictor of substance-related re-delinquency. Given this evidence, high drop-out rates pose a major problem in forensic addiction treatment in Germany. Legal preconditions for a premature discharge due to therapy failure are defined, and behavioral correlates are well described, but the precedent dynamics between patients and therapists ha…
The psychology of the lone terrorist
The German pilot Andreas Lubitz, who intentionally crashed a plane with 149 passengers, killing all on board including himself, had been a patient in psychiatric and psychotherapeutic consultations. This paper deals with the legal and psychoanalytic consequences of this action, including terminological issues concerning terrorism
Socioeconomic disadvantage and schizophrenia in migrants under mental health detention orders
BACKGROUND: Migrants with mental hospital orders according to section 63 of the German criminal code are overrepresented in relation to their numbers in the general population. Subgroups originating from certain world regions are diagnosed with schizophrenia at a much higher rate than others. In the present literature, there is a strong evidence for a substantial correlation between migration, social disadvantage and the prevalence of schizophren…
Coercion as part of a psychoanalytically based therapy
This paper presents the four-year forensic outpatient treatment of a male patient in his mid-30s who was diagnosed with a schizoaffective disorder and had previously been held on unlimited detention due to several assaults. At the beginning, several coercive measures had to be taken. Over time, both the therapeutic alliance and the patient's psychic structure improved remarkably. The patient explained at the end of therapy that, despite being for…
Years of IFPS societies in Switzerland
The Swiss member societies of the International Federation of Psychoanalytic Societies, namely the two existential analytic societies and the Institute of Psychoanalysis in Kreuzlingen, have always stressed the philosophical foundation of psychoanalysis as psychoanalytic approaches with severely disturbed and psychotic patients. The colleagues working in these institutes have often cooperated very closely with analysts from the International Psyc…
The use of psychoanalytic knowledge during the implementation of penal measures
Theoretical and clinical concepts of psychoanalysis are presented here in terms of their relevance for forensic psychotherapy. They can be applied to individual psychotherapy, special nursing care, and the theory and practice of a therapeutic community. Essential concepts of seduction and traumatisation are presented in the language of drive psychology, as well as in the modern terms of self psychology and object relations theory. The criminal ac…
Special Section
The emphasis on empirically-founded forensic treatments puts psychoanalytic approaches in a defensive position. This article shows how essential individual and group-analytic findings are in psychotherapy with mentally ill offenders. These findings are often used by behavioural therapists to present their programs in realistic situations. The experiences of the psychotherapy ward in Reichenau Mental Hospital exemplify these findings

Frieda Fromm-Reichmann
The paper discusses Frieda Fromm-Reichmann's theoretical contributions on the psychotherapy of psychoses and refers it to other authors' views. Today widely accepted, she stressed transference and countertransference as essential issues in the treatment of severely disturbed patients. She disagreed with authors like Federn who interpreted the concept of regression in a way that to treat schizophrenics means to treat children of different ages. Di…
