Environmental Captivity
The impact of the environmental crisis on humans is most often discussed either in terms of its adverse physical effects, such as illness or bodily harm resulting from pollution, extreme weather, and related factors, or in terms of its psychological effects, including environmentally related emotions such as anxiety, grief, or solastalgia. These perspectives, however, tend to overlook its existential dimension: namely, the ways in which the envir…
The Strange Bodies of Nature
This paper examines the concept of corporeality of the more-than-human world through the lens of phenomenology. It argues that we can identify a distinct strand within contemporary ecophenomenology that challenges the conventional understandings of corporeality – particularly the tendency to reduce corporeality to mere brute materiality. The paper identifies three primary ways in which ecophenomenologists challenge such reductive conceptions: (i)…
A Philosopher’s Fairy Tale
The faculty of imagination plays an important but somewhat ambivalent role in the works of Fëdor Dostoevskij and Søren Kierkegaard. In the first part of the paper, we provide a conceptual analysis …
Kierkegaard’s Existential Sacrifice
This paper aims to analyze the notions of sacrifice and existential entrapment in the early writings of Søren Kierkegaard. I look at two female characters that appear in Kierkegaard’s Either/Or – Marie Beaumarchais and Donna Elvira – and I argue that an encounter with a deceptive individual (a seducer) forced these two women to sacrifice their capacity for existential-spiritual growth. Donna Elvira and Marie Beaumarchais remain trapped – as Kierk…
