How does vacant housing redevelopment policy reshape regional housing markets? A dynamic spatial housing-CGE analysis
Crime-mediated externalities of vacant housing
The role of spatial structures in shaping regional economic resilience
Is Shanghai a rival to Seoul? Analysis on complementary and competitive relationships in trade
Despite the continuous expansion of trade and investment agreements between China and South Korea, little is known about the distribution of benefits and losses stemming from synergy and competition at the regional level. This paper aims to investigate the complementary and competitive interactions among 14 economic regions of the two countries concerning bilateral export scale. Using a Dendrinos-Sonis model based on a zero-sum structure, we anal…
Transport network changes and varying socioeconomic effects across China's Yangtze River Delta
Newly constructed transport infrastructure may have varying socioeconomic effects across cities and regions. This study employs a spatial equilibrium model to examine how the development of expressways and high-speed rails (HSRs) may induce changes in employed residents, housing rents, and consumer surplus within China's Yangtze River Delta region. Empirical findings indicate limited effects of transport infrastructure in reducing disparities, wh…
Delineating functional regions from road networks
We apply a percolation method to South Korea’s road networks and identify major urban clusters. The results show that Korea has developed a highly mono-centric spatial structure, in which the Seoul Metropolitan Area expands to northern Chungnam, far beyond the limits conventionally assumed. A percolation threshold of 1080 m is critical in delineating Korea’s functional regions, and the results at this threshold show great similarity to flow-based…
Reducing Fuel Subsidies and Financing Road Infrastructure in Indonesia
This article analyses whether government policies that reallocate funding for fuel subsidies to investment in transport infrastructure improve economic growth and income distribution. We develop a financial computable general equilibrium model to simulate the fiscal policies that reduce fuel subsidies to finance road investment. The novelty of this article is a dynamic model that covers multiple sectors, households, economic actors, assets and la…
The Relationship between Economic Growth and Air Pollution—A Regional Comparison between China and South Korea
This paper analyzes the interaction between regional economic growth and air pollution in China and Korea. The relationship between gross regional product per capita and industrial emission of sulfur dioxide emission is examined at the regional level using simultaneous equation models covering 286 cities in China and 228 cities and counties in South Korea of the period 2006-2016. The results find that regional differences existed in the relations…
Spatial economic impact of road and railroad accessibility on manufacturing output
Optimal Urban Population Size
This paper explores whether the population size of the Seoul Metropolitan Area (SMA) in Korea is efficient in terms of the national economy. To undertake this analysis, a recursively dynamic interregional computable general equilibrium (ICGE) model with a population module is developed. In this model, the explicit costs and benefits of population growth are estimated by using the industrial value added and consumer price inflation functions for e…
Elicitation of health values from mortality risk reduction
There are concerns regarding uncertainty about the accuracy of applying available empirical willingness-to-pay (WTP) estimates for reducing accidental deaths to value changes in risks of pollution-related deaths. In this study, we develop a theoretical model on defining WTP, and its determinants, and derive WTP estimates for changes in pollution-related mortality risks with varying morbidity and timing attributes. A survey is designed and conduct…
