Survey of Recent Developments
Following the remarkably successful 2014 parliamentary and presidential elections in Indonesia, attention now turns to the new president and his agenda for the next five years. President Joko Widodo, known as Jokowi, has emphasised the importance of strong economic growth and rising living standards. But he faces significant, broad-ranging economic challenges and, perhaps not surprisingly, serious discussion of these issues did not feature during…
Industrialisation after a Deep Economic Crisis
Indonesia experienced a deep economic contraction as a result of the 1997–1998 Asian crisis. This paper develops an analytical framework that facilitates an examination of trends and patterns in the country's industrial sector in the wake of the crisis, and explains why it appears to be on a lower growth trajectory. We particularly focus on why industrialisation has become less employment elastic; why industrial exports have performed indifferent…

Survey of recent developments
The survey period was dominated by the presidential election and its immediate aftermath. After receiving a clear mandate from the 20 September second-round election, on 20 October Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono (hereafter referred to as SBY) was installed as Indonesia's sixth president, and the first to be elected directly. He announced his cabinet that evening. The president inherits an economy which, in termsof per capita income, has recovered to pr…
'Perspiration' vs 'Inspiration' in Asian Industrialisation
This article examines trends in and determinants of total factor productivity (TFP) in 28 manufacturing industries in Indonesia over the period 1975-93. The reforms of the mid-1980s appeared to have resulted in a significant acceleration of TFP growth. Among the inter-industry determinants of TFP growth, trade policy and orientation, domestic competitive pressures and ownership factors are singled out for scrutiny. The trade regime and one measur…
How Not to Industrialise? Indonesia's Automotive Industry
This paper examines the development of the Indonesian automotive industry since 1970. After giving an overview of trends and a comparative East Asian assessment, we investigate ownership patterns, the political economy of intervention and key structural features of the industry. Output grew rapidly in the three decades to 1997; there was a significant increase in technological capacity; and some firms in the components and commercial vehicle sect…
What happens to industrial structure when countries liberalise? Indonesia since the mid‐1980s
In the large literature on the consequences of economic liberalisation, few studies have examined the impact on industrial structure. Indonesia provides a suitable case study: its policy reforms from the mid‐1980s were decisive, and its industrial data base is relatively sophisticated. This article briefly develops a framework with which such issues may be examined, and then assesses the impact of policy reforms on seller concentration, ownership…
