Le Mur de Berlin n'est jamais tombé
Historians in the Museum
In the last two decades Poland has experienced a museum boom. The numbers of new, or significantly remade museums, has grown rapidly, along with the growing numbers of museum visitors. Before the pandemic, Polish museums recorded more than thirty-eight million visits a year, a number equal to the size of Poland’s population. Among the most popular, with more than five-hundred thousand visits annually, were newly opened history museums, offering a…

Towards a new agenda for vocation
This article addresses the contemporary use of Luther's theology of vocation as a theological script for meaning‐making. Lived experiences of modern work demonstrate that many social structures and constraints challenge the notion of vocation in its classic form. A new agenda is called for and initial steps are taken to suggest a new way forward
Mapping Europe’s Borderlands: Russian Cartography in the Age of Empire by Steven Seegel
El camino hacia la no libertad
The Road to Unfreedom: Russia, Europe, America
"From the author of On Tyranny comes a stunning new chronicle of the rise of authoritarianism from Russia to Europe and America. With the end of the Cold War, the victory of liberal democracy was thought to be final. Observers declared the end of history, confident in a peaceful, globalized future. This faith was misplaced. Authoritarianism returned to Russia, as Putin found fascist ideas that could be used to justify rule by the wealthy. In the …

Sketches from a Secret War: A Polish Artist’s Mission to Liberate Soviet Ukraine
The forgotten protagonist of this true account aspired to be a cubist painter in his native Kyïv. In a Europe remade by the First World War, his talents led him to different roles intelligence operative, powerful statesman, underground activist, lifelong conspirator. Henryk Józewski directed Polish intelligence in Ukraine, governed the borderland region of Volhynia in the interwar years, worked in the anti-Nazi and anti-Soviet underground during …
The Reconstruction of Nations: Poland, Ukraine, Lithuania, Belarus, 1569–1999
Modern nationalism in northeastern Europe has often led to violence and then reconciliation between nations with bloody pasts. In this fascinating book, Timothy Snyder traces the emergence of Polish, Ukrainian, Lithuanian, and Belarusian nationhood over four centuries, discusses various atrocities (including the first account of the massive Ukrainian-Polish ethnic cleansings of the 1940s), and examines Poland’s recent successful negotiations with…
Are they paying attention? Students’ lack of motivation and attention potentially threaten the utility of course evaluations
Student evaluations are a common source of information used by instructors and administrators, but their utility depends on students’ motivation and attention. This paper presents evidence from two studies indicating that insufficient effort responding and lack of motivation may be problems in course evaluations. In the first study, approximately one in four students responded in an improbable way to ‘catch items’ embedded in actual course evalua…
The Power of the Powerless: Citizens Against the State in Central Eastern Europe
Books of great political insight and novelty always outlive their time of birth and this reissued work, initially published in 1985, is no exception. Written shortly after the formation of Charter 77, the essays in this collection are among the most original and compelling pieces of political writing to have emerged from central and Eastern Europe during the whole of the post-war period. Václav Havel’s essay provides the title for the book. It wa…

The Causes of the Holocaust
Not long ago I was discussing before a theatre audience in Philadelphia a performance of ‘Our Class’, Tadeusz Słobodziański's remarkable theatrical reinterpretation of Jan Gross's pioneering book Neighbors. It helped so very much that the discussion took place after rather than before the performance! It is a great honour to find my book at the centre of this discussion by colleagues, but it would be great vanity on my part to expect that every r…

Bloodlands: Europe between Hitler and Stalin
Between 1933 and 1945, some fourteen million civilians were killed by the Nazi and Soviet regimes as matter of deliberate policy in the lands between Berlin and Moscow. Although we may know something about individual policies of terror, we have failed to grasp the scale of the killing, and to realize its geographical specificity. In a New York Times review of Timothy Snyder's recent publication, Bloodlands, the book that forms the basis of this l…

To Resolve the Ukrainian Problem Once and for All”: The Ethnic Cleansing of Ukrainians in Poland, 1943–1947
The complicated and violent interactions between Ukrainians and Poles during and after World War II have been the subject of competing Ukrainian and Polish historical interpretations. This article sifts through the historical evidence to determine why Ukrainian and Polish memories of that period are so much at odds. The fate of the contested territories of Eastern Galicia and Volhynia was decided ultimately by the Soviet Union, which imposed new …

The Polish‐Lithuanian commonwealth since 1989: National narratives in relations among Poland, Lithuania, Belarus and Ukraine
Those who hold that national identity amounts to an organic historical tradition are likely to believe that it directly influences policy, while those who consider it recent and constructed are apt to contend that it is manipulated by political elites. A third position holds that nationally conscious people create narratives which, while constrained by brute historical facts, invariably prove their right to statehood. National conflicts, then, ar…

Nationalism, Marxism, and Modern Central Europe: A Biography of Kazimierz Kelles-Krauz (1872-1905)
Timothy Snyder presents the life and thought of Kazimierz Kelles-Krauz, an important Polish intellectual at the begninning of the 20th century. During his brief life in Poland, Paris, and Vienna, Kelles-Krauz influenced or infuriated most of the leaders of the various socialist movements of Central Europe and France. His central ideas ultimately were not accepted by the socialist mainstream at the time of his death. However, 90 years later, we se…

The Historical Reality of Eastern Europe
The Ethical Significance of Eastern Europe, Twenty Years On
Twenty years after the end of communism in Eastern Europe, the region seems to have lost its sheen of moral appeal. What has happened to the dissidents, the heroes, the ethical lessons? Yet the Eastern Europe of today has become, in new and surprising ways, the test case of three of the largest questions of political morality in the early twentieth century: free elections, energy independence, and the divisiveness of national memory
