  • What are the key capabilities needed by university teachers and are these embedded in existing frameworks

    Open Access•Ieva Stupans, Brendan O’Connell et al.•ARTICLE•The Australian Educational…•2025

This study aims to identify the key capabilities needed by university teachers and to examine the extent to which current university frameworks specify and define standards for these skills. This paper is based on extensive literature review and comparative study of individual university frameworks utilising a comparative document analysis. Our key findings are that there is a diverse range of capabilities cited across the literature but only a w…

  • A new sustainable change theoretical framework for the professional disciplines

    Open Access•Brendan O’Connell, Ieva Stupans et al.•ARTICLE•Higher Education Quarterly•2023

This paper contends that one key reason for the lack of adoption of comprehensive change models based in higher education (HE) teaching and learning is that they lack a strong theoretical underpinning, thus potentially impeding their effectiveness in dealing with the complexities of human and organisational behaviour. Change theories that articulate the specific roles and influences of context, time and key actors in the change process are interr…

  • Towards an effective change framework for scholarly teaching in higher education professional degrees

Margaret Jollands, Ieva Stupans et al.•ARTICLE•Higher Education Research &…•2023

Sustained innovation in teaching and learning is needed to achieve high-quality outcomes in student learning. However, despite extensive research in teaching and learning practice, challenges are faced to translate teaching research into scholarly practice, especially in professional degrees. This article develops and proposes a new conceptual framework for sustainable change in teaching and learning in higher education professional disciplines. …

  • Transnational Communities of Practice

Open Access•Meredith Tharapos, Brendan O’Connell et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Studies in International…•2022

Critical to the successful maintenance and survival of a transnational education partnership is the role of faculty. Our study documents the operational and social relationships between faculty teaching transnationally. Through interviews and observation, we find that informal communities of practice (CoP) spontaneously evolve, serving to improve faculty’s teaching and learning practice while in situ. The key to CoP effectiveness is members’ cult…

  • The gradual retreat from academic citizenship

Open Access•Nicola J Beatson, Meredith Tharapos et al.•ARTICLE•Higher Education Quarterly•2022

This paper critically explores the notion of academic citizenship, evaluates its importance and argues that faculty have shifted away from engaging in collegial activities to behaviour that is purposefully targeted towards the attainment of academic performance metrics. We highlight the significant implications and challenges for the academy of a gradual retreat from academic citizenship in an era characterised by academic capitalism. We argue th…

  • Does calibration reduce variability in the assessment of accounting learning outcomes

Brendan O’Connell, Paul De Lange et al.•ARTICLE•Assessment & Evaluation in Higher…•2016

Reliable, consistent assessment process that produces comparable assessment grades between assessors and institutions is a core activity and an ongoing challenge with which universities have failed to come to terms. In this paper, we report results from an experiment that tests the impact of an intervention designed to reduce grader variability and develop a shared understanding of national threshold learning standards by a cohort of reviewers. T…

  • Strategic manoeuvres and impression management

    Brendan O’Connell, Paul De Lange et al.•ARTICLE•Business History•2016•Cited by: 1•References: 30

This historical study examines the actions of the Australian former asbestos company, James Hardie, when faced with a potentially ruinous corporate scandal between 2001 and 2007. The company became vilified as public awareness grew of the damage to public health its use of asbestos had caused. In response, it set-up a knowingly underfunded compensation fund supported by a strategy of misinformation and denial. Its actions are analysed using Olive…

  • Social moderation, assessment and assuring standards for accounting graduates

Kim Watty, Mark Freeman et al.•ARTICLE•Assessment & Evaluation in Higher…•2014

Evidencing student achievement of standards is a growing imperative worldwide. Key stakeholders (including current and prospective students, government, regulators and employers) want confidence that threshold learning standards in an accounting degree have been assured. Australia’s new higher education regulatory environment requires that student achievements are benchmarked against intended programme learning outcomes, guided by published disci…
