Open Access•Amy Carroll, Holly Chen et al.•ARTICLE•Social Psychology of Education•2026

Traditional methods of exploring classroom emotions usually rely on self-reported data gathered retrospectively. Using a single exploratory case study design with multimodal methods, namely, momentary self-report ( S*3 app ), physiological ( Empatica 4 skin conductance wristbands), and observational measures, we explored the effects of mindfulness practice on the emotional states of students in a secondary school classroom. Specifically, we measu…

  • Working behind the scenes

    Open Access•Julie Bower, David M Higgins et al.•ARTICLE•Business History•2025•References: 65

We present an historically informed case study of the Scotch Whisky Association (SWA), during the 1950s, and 1960s, to illustrate the fundamental role it played in protecting the Scotch whisky industry in its key export market, the US. We illuminate the relationship between the SWA and its eminent legal counsel in the US, Ansel Luxford, who shielded the SWA from a major dispute between US and Canadian distillers. Our study explores the following …

Concerns regarding high rates of teacher stress and burnout are present globally. Yet there is limited current data regarding the severity of stress, or the role of intrapersonal and environmental factors in relation to teacher stress and burnout within the Australian context. • Litigation and Lobbying in Support of the Marque

    Open Access•Julie Bower, David M Higgins et al.•ARTICLE•Enterprise & Society•2021•Cited by: 3•References: 13

We examine the Scotch Whisky Association’s (SWA) role in protecting “Scotch whisky” between c. 1945 and c. 1990. Using new archival evidence, we demonstrate that the SWA intensively lobbied the UK government to achieve coordination between domestic and European regulations governing Scotch whisky and whisky. The SWA’s nonmarket activities were consonant with some trade associations but in other respects they were atypical. The SWA extended its ac…

This article investigates a structural ownership model that is used to protect firms from unwelcome capital market intrusion: a multiple-share arrangement. It details the evolution of one of the United Kingdom’s most successful former family firms, Whitbread, in the post-World War II era. In investigating the formation and operation of the so-called Whitbread Umbrella, the study poses the question of whether it was a positive factor in long-term …

  • Vertical and financial ownership

    Julie Bower•ARTICLE•Business History•2016•Cited by: 1•References: 52

Traditionally the UK brewing industry was vertically integrated with brewers owning and controlling pubs. This came to an abrupt end in the forced divestment of a large proportion of the major brewers' pub estates in the 1989 ‘Beer Orders’. The divested pubs spawned the independent pub companies. This study of regulatory policy and financial services interest in the UK brewing industry poses the question of whether the original industrial structu…

Firms engage in a multitude of interactions with the external environment, most critically with government and its regulatory agencies.
