    Open Access•Jorge Hernández-Barahona, Águeda Gil-López et al.•ARTICLE•Revista de Historia Económica /…•2026•References: 74

This paper explores the relationship between entrepreneurship, measured by the number of new firms per million inhabitants, and modern economic growth in Spain between 1886 and 2000. Following Audretsch and Keilbach’s methodology, our analysis seems to confirm that entrepreneurship has had a positive and statistically significant effect on GDP per capita and labor productivity. This finding challenges the traditional view that the entrepreneurial…

  • Big business as political actors

Elena San Román, Elena García San Román et al.•ARTICLE•Business History•2026•References: 55

This paper explores the interactions between big companies and authoritarian regimes operating under economic nationalism during periods of economic and political transition. Focusing on FIAT, SEAT and VAZ in the automotive industry, it shows how Spain and the USSR leveraged FIAT’s technology to support national industrialisation through politically isolated periods. In the 1940s, economic nationalism evolved in Spain from private oligopolies to …

  • Networks throughout an institutional transition

    Teresa Mateo López-Mora, Águeda Gil-López et al.•ARTICLE•Management & Organizational History•2024•References: 17

This study explores how networks for entrepreneurial activities evolve and change during an institutional transition at the macro level. For this purpose, we present the historical case study of Meliá, a pioneering company in the development of the Spanish tourism industry during Franco ́s Regime (1939–1975), when the country evolved from interventionism and isolation toward an increasingly market-oriented economy. Our study shows how Meliá's net…

  • Bricolage and Innovation in the Emergence and Development of the Spanish Tourism Industry

    Open Access•Jorge Hernández-Barahona, Elena San Román et al.•ARTICLE•Enterprise & Society•2022•Cited by: 2•References: 13

Following the seminal work of Lévi-Strauss, developed by Baker and Nelson and Duymedjian and Rüling, this paper analyzes the role that entrepreneurial bricolage played as an innovation tool in the origins and growth of four important Spanish tourism companies: Meliá, Barceló, Iberostar, and Riu. Their development has been deeply embedded in the island of Majorca (Spain), whose historical market conditions shaped and drove the companies’ bricolage…

Drawing on the corporate entrepreneurship (CE) theory, this article examines the rise of the Spanish engineering consulting firm Técnica y Proyectos SA (TYPSA), from its foundation, in 1966, as a project office within a larger national-based construction fgroup, until its consolidation as a family multinational in the 2000s. Our research shows how contextual and intra-organizational changes affect the CE drivers identified by entrepreneurship the…

  • As old as history

Elena San Román, Paloma Fernández Pérez et al.•ARTICLE•Business History•2014•Cited by: 1•References: 31

This article presents empirical evidence about the contribution of family-controlled business groups as highly efficient alternatives to the large vertically integrated and professionally managed corporation in specific institutional and market environments. This hypothesis is tested with a single case study, SEUR, in the Spanish transport services sector. SEUR is one of the most prominent Spanish courier companies. It was founded during Franco’s…

  • Un Zaibatsu Fuera de Lugar

    Open Access•Elena San Román•ARTICLE•Revista de Historia Económica /…•2009•Cited by: 3•References: 8

This work focuses on the origins of the Fierro Group. Ildefonso Fierro (1882–1961) was one of the most prominent businessmen of Franco's regime. Fierro's case study presents two features that distinguish it from other Spanish family firms founded in the first half of the twentieth century: its high degree of diversifcation and its peculiar financial history. Prior to the commencement of the Franco dictatorship, Fierro had managed to form a divers…

The Spanish synthetic fuels experiment was carried out by a state-owned firm which was endowed with huge financial and commercial privileges. The technological support for the project was to come from the German firm I.G. Farben. After the Nazi defeat, it suffered cutbacks and delays. The factory only reached normal levels of production in 19…
