Globalization and the impact of the late 19th-century agrarian crisis on well-being
The urban–rural height gap
This paper aims to establish whether there was a gap in biological living standards between urban and rural areas in late nineteenth-century Catalonia, and if so, to determine its extent. The study makes use of a large new dataset based on military records for the cohort of males born in the year 1890 and enlisted in the year 1911. By combining individual heights with information at municipal level, we conclude that the 1890 cohort of conscripts …
Business history and the resilience of regional economies
While resilience has become a key concern within a variety of disciplines in recent years, it requires further development in the field of business history. With the aim of providing new conceptual and empirical insights into the study of regional business history, in this introduction to this special issue we provide a general overview to the literature on regional economic resilience and to the concept of resilience. This is followed by a revie…
Sibship Size, Height and Cohort Selection
This article deals with the historical relationship between the number of siblings in a family or household and height, a proxy for biological living standards. Ideally, this relationship is better assessed when we have evidence on the exact number of siblings in a family from its constitution onwards. However, this generally requires applying family reconstitution techniques, which, unfortunately, is not always possible. In this latter case, sch…
The expansion of branding in international marketing
Drawing on a variety of sources, this article investigates the emergence and expansion of branding in the international olive oil markets prior to World War II. It documents the rapid growth of the world trade in packaged olive oil from the 1870s onwards and shows that the main destinations of this consumer-ready product were in the Americas. In this respect, it complements previous findings based on the use of trademark registration figures. The…
Sibship size and the biological standard of living in industrial Catalonia, c.1860–c.1920
By using military records and population censuses this article investigates the relationship between sibship size and the biological living standards of young males, as measured by height. Focusing on a medium-sized industrial town in Catalonia the analysis shows that the impact of sibship size on child outcomes, as hypothesised by the resource dilution explanation, was rather weak during the years of the first fertility transition. Sibship size …
The Growth of an Agribusiness Cluster in Catalonia
This article aims to contribute to an understanding of the evolution of agribusiness clusters. It focuses on Catalonia, one of Europe’s leading regions in the agro-food industry; and it takes as a case-study olive oil, a typical Mediterranean commodity. After identifying the cluster and the main stages of its evolution, the article shows that the three decades following the years around 1890 were the most dynamic period for the cluster. Whereas s…
Marshall in Iberia. Industrial Districts and Leading Firms in the Creation of Competitive Advantage in Fashion Products
Firms dealing with “Made in Spain” fashion products (e.g., textiles, apparel, and footwear) have increased their presence in the world market over the last two decades. This paper focuses on the origins of this process. After constructing a new database of export districts, it first investigates the sources of the international competitiveness of these districts. Second, it explores whether industrial districts boosted the internationalization of…
Product differentiation and entry barriers
This article analyses the entry process of Mediterranean export firms in the American markets for packaged olive oil between the 1880s and the 1930s. It explores whether those entry barriers traditionally identified by the literature emerged and to what extent they influenced such an entry process. Using trade data for the early 1930s, the article shows higher average levels of exporters' concentration in the Americas than elsewhere. It also docu…
