  • Dammed Waterways and a Colonial Legacy

    Open Access•Sashi Sivramkrishna, Amalendu Jyotishi•ARTICLE•Global Environment•2023

Through an exploration of events that unfolded from the earliest calls for conservancy of Indian fisheries under the British colonial government in 1867 to the passing of a statutory law in 1897, we argue that colonial law-making was a non-linear and complex evolutionary, rather than transformational process. The basis and blueprint for a statutory law in India can be traced to similar concerns in the over-exploitation of riverine fish in Britain…

  • Win-win corporations

    Sashi Sivramkrishna•ARTICLE•Business History•2018

Win-win corporations: the Indian way of shaping successful strategies." Business History, 61(8), pp. 1388–1389

  • From merchant to merchant-ruler

    Sashi Sivramkrishna•ARTICLE•Business History•2014•Cited by: 3•References: 19

Many nineteenth-century historians claimed that the English East India Company's trade and commercial activities, right from inception, were never really a financially profitable enterprise. This argument is incorporated within an altered structure–conduct–performance (SCP) paradigm to rearticulate the Company's history between 1600 and 1765. Rather than characterising the Company as simply a chartered monopoly, the article instead argues that th…

  • Macroeconomic and Environmental History

    Open Access•Sashi Sivramkrishna•ARTICLE•Global Environment•2009

The impact of the macroeconomic context, particularly monetary disturbances, on the environment has been hitherto ignored in the study of Indian environmental history. The links between macroeconomics and the environment, however, have been extensively studied and debated in recent times in connection with the structural adjustment programmes (SAPs) that many developing countries have been induced to adopt. A closer examination of India’s monetar…

  • Production Cycles and Decline in Traditional Iron Smelting in the Maidan, Southern India, c. 1750-1950

    Sashi Sivramkrishna•ARTICLE•Environment and History•2009

This paper explores how economics, technology, politics and ecology interacted in causing ups and downs in the production of traditional iron making, and its subsequent decline in the early twentieth century. In the course of this exercise we find many lacunae in the study of Indian environmental history. These include a neglect of the impact of traditional iron and steel smelting industry on forests in pre- and early-colonial times, the possible…

  • Ascertaining Living Standards in Erstwhile Mysore, Southern India, from Francis Buchanan's Journey of 1800-01

Sashi Sivramkrishna•ARTICLE•Journal of the Economic and…•2009•Cited by: 5

India's position in the Great Divergence debate has remained tentative due to scanty data availability for the medieval and early modern periods. In the years 1800-01, Dr. Francis Buchanan conducted one of the first agricultural surveys in the erstwhile state of Mysore and its adjoining regions. His Journey contains a wealth of information, both quantitative and qualitative, which has not been studied systematically so far. This paper brings toge…

  • Articulating Uneven Regional Development

Sashi Sivramkrishna, Ramakrushna Panigrahi•ARTICLE•Journal of Human Development•2003

There is an urgent need for more efficient and effective design, targeting and implementation of interventions to reduce regional imbalances in development. To do so, development agencies and practitioners need to articulate uneven regional development as regional inequalities in, and patterns of, development. The widespread popularity of composite indices like the Human Development Index has led to the acceptance of regional inequalities as a ba…
