We examine the role of cybercrime legislation globally in shaping the stability of the banking system. We compile a novel dataset covering the enactment of cybercrime legislation in 132 developed and developing countries to test this research question empirically. We find that the enactment of cybercrime laws enhances the stability of the banking sector. This key finding holds across a comprehensive suite of robustness tests, including alternativ…

Government Venture Capital Programs
Governmental bodies around the world are paying increasing attention to the subsidization of research and development through venture capital programs. In both the US and Canada, approximately 90% of all venture capital investments are in the technology sectors. The perceived importance of developing the knowledge-based high-tech sectors has led to a large number of government programs designated to subsidize through direct government venture cap…

Gender Diversity and Securities Fraud
We formulate theory on the effect of board of director gender diversity on the broad spectrum of securities fraud, and generate three key insights. First, based on ethicality, risk aversion, and diversity, we hypothesize that gender diversity on boards can operate as a significant moderator for the frequency of fraud. Second, we advance that the stock market response to fraud from a more gender-diverse board is significantly less pronounced. Thir…
Corporate Defaults, Workouts, and the Rise of the Distressed Asset Investment Industry
We examine the formation and growth of the distressed asset investment industry during the late twentieth century, with specific focus on the strategies of the leading firms. The distressed asset investment industry is dominated by firms based in the United States and is relatively concentrated, due in large part to early movers developing distinctive investment capabilities through participation in landmark transactions, relationship-specific re…
The Oxford Handbook of Private Equity
The term private equity typically includes investments in venture capital or growth investment, as well as late stage, mezzanine, turnaround (distressed), and buyout investments. It typically refers to the asset class of equity securities in companies that are not publicly traded on a stock exchange. However, private equity funds do in fact make investments in publicly held companies, and some private equity funds are even publicly listed. Articl…

Financial Capital among Minority-Owned Businesses
This article examines the financing patterns of minority-owned businesses. It first reviews findings from the previous literature on financing constraints and related constraints faced by minority firms. Next it conducts an extensive empirical analysis of the barriers to financing faced by minority-owned firms using data from three sources: the Survey of Business Owners (SBO), the Kauffman Firm Survey (KFS), and the Survey of Small Business Finan…
Outside Enterpreneurial Capital
This article investigates factors that affect rejection rates in applications for outside finance among different types of investors (banks, venture capital funds, leasing firms, factoring firms, trade customers and suppliers, partners and working shareholders, private individuals and other sources), taking into account the non-randomness in a firm's decision to seek outside finance. The data support the traditional pecking order theory. Further,…
