  • Buddhist Protectionism, Political Imaginaries of Belonging, and Prospects for Covenantal Pluralism in Myanmar

    A Horstmann•ARTICLE•The Review of Faith & International…•2020•References: 22

After decades of military rule in Myanmar, civil society organizations and the National League for Democracy (NLD) have used the opening public space to mount inter-religious dialogue and to raise sensibility for religious freedom in an ethnically and religiously diverse nation. At the same time, the new democratic space is also used by well-resourced Buddhist and nationalist organizations and the military in the name of protecting race and Buddh…

  • An American Hero

    Open Access•A Horstmann•ARTICLE•Religions•2019•Cited by: 1•References: 10

This article examines the vastly expanded mobility of displaced Karen villagers in the evangelical humanitarian movement, the Free Burma Rangers. This builds on ethnographic fieldwork on humanitarian cultures in the Thai-Burmese borderlands conducted since 2007 with a Thai research team and funded by Max Planck Institute for the Study of Religious Diversity. While refugees are too often presented as victims, the article argues that by joining the…

While permeable and ambiguous national borders can be said to play a crucial role in Anderson s work (1983) on the imagined community of the modern nation as well as in Thongchai s path-breaking study (1994) on the emergence of a hierarchical ethno-geography of modern Siam, it is astonishing how little attention has been given so far to international borders in Southeast Asia. There are strong reasons why the study of borders is timely. The borde…

    A Horstmann•ARTICLE•Journal of Borderlands Studies•2014•Cited by: 10•References: 16

In this paper, I hope to add a complementary perspective to James Scott's recent work on avoidance strategies of subaltern mountain people by focusing on what I call the refugee public. The educated Karen elite uses the space of exile in the Thai borderland to reconstitute resources and to re-enter Karen state in Eastern Burma as humanitarians, providing medical, educational resources and help to document human rights violations and do advocacy w…

  • Échanges de gestuelles religieuses dans l'espace rituel

    A Horstmann, Anne-Hélène Kerbiriou•ARTICLE•Anthropologie et Sociétés•2013•Cited by: 1•References: 15

    Open Access•A Horstmann•ARTICLE•Journal of Southeast Asian Studies•2011•Cited by: 4•References: 11

In this article, I provide a preliminary analysis of Buddhist–Muslim coexistence in the Songkhla Lake area in southern Thailand as it unfolds on the margins of a violent conflict in the Deep South (Patani, Yala and Narathiwat provinces). I argue that in the Songkhla Lake area, social, religious, economic and political alliances are reflected in multi-religious ritual traditions that have the potential to transcend cultural difference or manage di…

  • Sacred Networks and Struggles among the Karen Baptists across the Thailand-Burma Border

    Open Access•A Horstmann•ARTICLE•Moussons•2011•Cited by: 11•References: 16

In this article, I provide a case study of a moving border between Thailand and Burma. Emphasizing the agency of people who become refugees, the article is concerned to point out the important role of religious networks in providing humanitarian assistance, shelter and mobility to stateless Karen refugees. I argue that Christian and Buddhist literate networks- realigned in political exile, develop competing visions of a Karen “homeland.” Arguing …

This paper examines faith-based humanitarian organizations and their multiple alliances with Karen Baptist missionary networks in the context of the Karen refugee crisis. Far from being only passive recipients of humanitarian assistance, I argue that Karen people become important agents of proselytizing, using their cultural capital to reach out to the imagined community of would-be Christians. Doing so, Karen are able to expand opportunities and…

This article analyses the interface between a transnational pietist Islamic movement on the one hand and Muslim villagers in Nakhon Sri Thammarat, Southern Thailand on the other. The Tablighi Jamaat (henceforth abbreviated as TJ) expands at a fast pace, covering nearly every village with their weekly visits. Tha Sala in Nakhon Si Thammarat province is one of their showcases of success, as is Mayo in Patani province. However, the movement's effort…

  • Ethnohistorical Perspectives on Buddhist‐ Muslim Relations and Coexistence in Southern Thailand

    A Horstmann•ARTICLE•Journal of Social Issues in…•2004

This review article of ethnological literature on the area straddling southern Thailand and peninsular Malaysia is the author's first attempt to show the historical development of Muslim-Buddhist relations in the period 1969-2002. The literature mirrors the transformation of Muslim-Buddhist relations from shared cosmos to the mobilization of hatred by illustrating the local institutions of coexistence (intermarriage, local beliefs in common ances…

    Open Access•A Horstmann•BOOK•Class, Culture and Space•2002•Cited by: 2•References: 15

In the present social and cultural transformation of South Thailand's cultural politics, ideologies involving the family, gender and home provide the cultural codes in social dramas of the state, the media and social and religious movements. This study looks at micropolitics and the nesting of the political action of everyday life in larger, ultimately global structures of power. Exploring the making of class, culture and space, the production an…

  • The Revitalization of Islam in Southeast Asia

    Open Access•A Horstmann•ARTICLE•STUDIA ISLAMIKA•1970

Darul Arqam was founded relatively late in 7968 in Malaysia, while Jemaat Tabligh was founded 1927 in India, but is active in nearly all countries where Muslims live. Both organizations could be described as grassroots and have from the very beginning sought to revitalize Islam by emphasizing piety, da'wa, Islamic rituals and most of all, the establishment of a utopian commune. Thus this article, amongst other things, seeks to analyze the influen…

  • Gender, Tabligh, and the "Docile Agent"

    Open Access•A Horstmann•ARTICLE•STUDIA ISLAMIKA•1970

In this article, I hope to explore some aspects of the complexity of the subject. Engagement in the Tablighi movement is neither a mere act of emancipation nor the complete subordination of women's agency to the rule of men.1 I suggest that the answer to the attraction of the movement to women lies between these two lines. I propose that the women who choose to ally themselves with the movement are prepared to submit themselves to the rules of th…
