Two or Three Confusions About Vibrations
Road traffic noise is considered the largest contributor to excessive noise exposure levels in Europe. Central to this type of noise is what is called “rolling noise.” This article emerges from an ethnographic encounter with a group of individuals in Greater Paris who are protesting road traffic noise, not as noise, but as vibrations. But is there a difference between noise and vibration? Why are vibrations not included within noise regulations? …
G Specters: Three Disclosures from the Otherworld
This article attends to spectral experiences surrounding 5G infrastructure and risks associated with electromagnetic fields through ethnographic fieldwork in Germany and the UK, exploring them in their specificity as a spectral manner of being. Drawing on Jacques Derrida's figuring of the specter as a ‘structural opening’ and Isabelle Stengers's concept of ‘disclosure’, we trace three spectral moments—attunements to an equivocal spectrum, dis/pos…

Approximations: "On Some Ways to Listen to a Building "in the Making
What sounds and noises does a future building make? How do architectural acousticians listen to a building in the making? How do you measure something that is not yet there? What is the epistemological status of approximations? Following the listening practices of acousticians as they measure a future experience of sound through a mock-up and of noise through an incomplete simulation, this article explores the challenge of fixing sound and noise …
